What do you mean "high"? You think feeding two kids on $260,000 a year is easy? Or feeding four kids on $650,000 is all fun in the sun? If it were, the people in the illustration would not look so overwhelmingly depressed. $650,000 just doesn't stretch as far as it used to for feeding a hungry family these days. I think they look sad because Obama's taxes are going to reduce them to food stamps at this rate.
SEM, this makes sense when you realize what people actually make. As an example, my parents are teachers and they combined bring in less then 60k a year. Most people working at game dev studios (which is considered a big money industry) take in less then 50k and gamestop managers in NYC generally don't make over 30k.
This is also the higher end of what "middle class" people make in urban areas considering New York City is one of the most expensive cities in America to even live in.
