I saw The Hobbit last night. I was pretty blown away. I was highly looking forward to it because of my love of the LOTR movies. There was alot the same in comparison to the LOTR movies. But there was alot different too, The Hobbit is simply a more light hearted tale, and I think the movie captured that perfectly. Kiba is right that is kind of why the movie feels different. Those going into The Hobbit expecting LOTR I think is a bad way to approach the film. Also I would my breath on really judging these movies till they have all come out, same as the original trilogy. I look forward to this time next year, I am actually very happy that I have these movies to look forward too for the next couple years. I remember being very excited about going to see the next lotr movies when they released in theatres and I am getting that same feeling again.

Anyone have a chance yet to see it in BOTH 48fps and 24? How is it?

I only watched the 24fps 2d version. I just cant imagine the film looking like it was video recorder quality in 48 frames. Maybe the 2d version is just that good. And they kind of did rely a bit on CGI this time around, but it was still good cgi, and it had its own aesthetic that provided to the over all experience I think. Then again some of the non-cgi elements also contributed to the very same aesthetics, so all around I think the aesthetic is spot on.

So once all these films are out what's going to be the suggested viewing order between this trilogy and LOTR? I know the Hobbit is a prequel but from the little bits of trailers I have seen there seems to be a lot of nods to the LOTR films.

Definitely Hobbit then LOTR when it's all over with. It'll all tie together beautifully then, or should.

I just saw this in 3D with my siblings. I really enjoyed it. While it's been a few years since I read The Hobbit, the film stays pretty true to it and it does have the same sort of lighthearted feel to it (like Kiba said).

From what I understand, Hobbit was written first then LOTR came in and expanded the mythology from there. Since LOTR came out as a movie series first, I guess they decided to do the reverse and allude to the events that will happen later on this one.

They might also be putting stuff in this new trilogy that made the cut in the old one.

Yeah Hobbit is set before LotR and focuses on Bilbo Baggins.

And yes they have added things for instance Saruman is not in the Hobbit book but is in the film. Same for Legolas who is in the up coming film.

Well, technically, a lot of the added material is actually from Unfinished Tales [Necromancer featuring more prominently, for example], so it's not like Jackson is really retconning/rewriting too much. I think of Jackson's films as their own continuity though, they've never been straight adaptations, but they are as good as we are ever going to get from such an expansive array of books.

Hobbit came first then LOTR. However It was one book. LOTR was 3. So them trying to make this 3 movies is dumb. The first movie was not very good and in the original trilogy they put so much detail in the film from the handcrafted armor for each orc to the actually letting the greenery around the real working village of the shire grow for a full year. This series it's all CGI and all green screen.

You say its dumb to make it 3 movies but The Hobbit did over $1B so if the others do it or even close its not dumb at all.

Why not really draw it out, make 9 LOTR Films, 3 for each book.

There is enough material to do that, theoretically. LOTR fans were actually pissed the films were "only" three hours long.
