Saw the 2012 version of Total Recall

I saw this a little while ago too. I thought it was a bit like the 1990 version, except with everything that made that movie brilliant removed and replaced with bland.

I watched Akira. I had seen it once before, when I was ten back in the 90's. But it was on Sci FI's Saturday Anime block in Pan and Scan on a 13" tv that had a commercial every 2 minutes, was 3-4 hours long to shoe horn in as many advertisements as humanly possible breaking the immersion and considering how violent the film is, I can only imagine how butchered it must have been to air on a Saturday morning tv slot. My gosh what a difference seeing it in 1080p. The artwork is so detailed and colorful. It really makes modern cartoons like Family Guy look painfully simplistic and bland in comparison. The story held up a lot better not getting interrupted every couple of minutes for commercials and I think being older helped with understanding the themes as well. The climax still makes me feel like throwing up.

Boyz N The Hood.

First time seeing it all the way through. Good film but unfortunately gets a little cheesy towards the end which kills the impact it could've had. Still, worth watching.

^It's a John Singleton film, what else to you expect but cheese. Despite its classic status the film really doesn't hold up very well under scrutiny of any kind. For an ever cheesier Singleton movie check out Poetic Justice, I still actually like that film though... but I draw the line at Baby Boy, I DRAW THE LINE at Baby Boy. Awful film.

Surely an understatement! But yeah Akira is great, and it's all about how you see it. I saw the remastered version of it in the cinema a couple years ago. It was great seeing the film in that way, because it's such an epic movie. Sadly every person I've tried to convert to anime through Akira have never particularly taken to it, I guess it's a bit too intense for people new to anime.

Baby Boy was good from what I remember though. Haven't seen his other films.

Also saw Menace II Society. Great beginning, pretty crappy 2/3rds after that. Lots of violence and stuff but I felt disconnected from all of it, really. At least I had some connection in Boyz in the Hood cause the characters were tight knit from the get-go.

That's why I felt so let down cause the beginning was crazy crazy good. Really wish the rest of the film was like that.

Baby Boy does seem to have a better IMDB score than Poetic Justice, so maybe I should give it another go. But then, my enjoyment of Poetic Justice is completely non-rational and I think partially due to how hilariously bad it in many (every?) ways was. Either way though, I think calling Baby Boy "good" is madness. In fact, describing any Singleton film as "good" is dubious. Boyz n The Hood is the closest hes come.

Menace 2 Society is pretty sensationalistic, and probably isn't deserving of the "this is what's real" tagline, but if memory serves correct it at least eschews some of the half baked and misguided themes and dialogue that annoyed in Boyz. A chief offender that I can recall clearly being Furious' good natured but completely nonsensical street sermon. Though I do agree that Boyz has more warmth and likeability than Menace, so overall I'd probably pick it over Menace too.

You know, I never liked the other movies despite liking the whole 4th wall breaking, self aware stuff. It's real hard to get into a slasher film even if its making fun of itself. So far, this one is okay.

Olympus Has Fallen.

Holy shit, this movie sucks. I had no idea it was possible to take an intriguing premise, fill it to the brim with action, and STILL somehow make it boring to watch.

Watched the 3 films again last week and this is such an underrated scene IMO in that I don't think Ive seen many talking about it mainly due to Ledger's Joker.

Aaron Eckhart is just fantastic in this scene [Everyone is for that matter] not to mention the music which has a great build up.

This is so sad, tragic, and sometimes uncomfortable to sit through. But that's because DeNiro is so damn good in it.

Have to agree. I didn't even know Scorsese did this until a little later after stumbling upon it. I'm not his biggest fan but I really enjoyed this movie, especially the ending which is open to interpretation.
