Side Effects.

It's a nice movie but Rooney Mara really shines in it. Third movie I've seen where she's absolutely phenomenal.

I just saw the Big Star Documentary, Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me.

phpBB [video]

Really cool to see, most likely my favorite band but my opinions often sway back and forth. I'd recommend it to anybody who likes artists like Elliott Smith, The Beatles, Nick Drake, and of course, Big Star and Chris Bell.

The 90s remake of Psycho, less then 10 minutes in and its pissing me off.

Move the bitch out of the way so I can see Aragon naked. You can't have Viggo Mortensen prancing around on screen and not give us a shot of the good. Boogie Nights delivered, Wild Things delivered...fucking Psycho remake.

Even if it was by the robot falling on him while dancing.

Saw the 2012 version of Total Recall last night (I won't call it a remake, because that's not quite accurate). Actually better than I expected. Some really good action, and the special effects are really quite good in places. I've never been big into the original, so I guess I wasn't bothered by the fact that it's something different, as some other people might.
But I do think roughly the first half of the movie is better than the second half. The first half has a very Binary Domain/Deus Ex vibe to it, and that's really appealing to me personally. It builds you up into thinking there's really going to be some kind of grand payoff if you stick around.
But then you get to the second half, and while it does still have some good action, the story gets kind of lame. And it's even worse when you're introduced to the "resistance," and it's just a bunch of dopey-looking chuds in earthy-colored trenchcoats. It just felt so much like a cheesy, early-90s sci-fi flick at that point, the kind that tries too hard to look cool.
Not to mention that after leading you on for the entire movie, there really isn't any kind of great twist after the midway point. It ends up being really straightforward, which for some reason disappointed me.

So basically, I really liked the first half a lot, but once it introduces Jessica Biel everything gets kind of... "blah." I've just never liked her. Not that she brings the movie down on her own or anything, but her arrival does kind of signal the downward spiral toward the end.

Worth a watch, just don't be fooled by any of the mind-fuck attempts near the beginning. They're complete red herrings, unfortunately.

Observe and Report, really fucked up comedy with Seth Rogan. Hes basically a mall cop trying to catch a streaker, and he has some MENTAL ISSUES, its funny but fucked up as hell.

Red Eye. Pretty good little thriller, obviously written to be a sort of low-budget, dialogue-driven flick. Works well enough, and it's worth a watch, but the ending feels a little rushed, and the final line of the film is sort of groan-worthy.
Still, not too bad. Cillian Murphy is good in it.

Also saw the grand majority of Savages (only missed the first ten or twenty minutes; made enough sense regardless).
I swear to god, this movie is just like The Dark Knight.
And I don't mean the plot is the same or anything, just that the final movie has the exact same effect on me that TDK had. The story is good, and it's generally well-made all around, but there's one aspect that steals the show every time it shows up:
Benicio del fucking Toro.
Just like Heath Ledger in TDK, Benicio del Toro owns the movie every time he appears on screen. He's just so fucking good in it.
There are aspects of the movie I outright dislike, sure. The three-person love story is so goddamn "blah" that I just couldn't bring myself to give a shit about the characters involved. It takes up so much of the focus of the movie, yet it's so unrelatable and forced that all it does is brings things down. Even if del Toro wasn't around, the story wouldn't make the movie bad necessarily, but it's nowhere near as avant garde or interesting as the movie thinks it is. Even if the girl was only involved with one of the guys, and the other was just her brother or something, it really wouldn't have changed much at all.
But either way, Benicio del Toro steps on screen and suddenly everything turns awesome, and suddenly I love this fucking movie. He's The Joker, he's Jack Sparrow... he's the guy that isn't the "star" by way of the script, and yet he's so obviously the fucking star of the finalized flick.
I love scene-stealers like that, and I love Benicio del Toro.

I tuned out for most of that flick, only thing that was good besides Benicio del Toro was the way they did the ending which was unexpected.

But that and Seven Psychopaths were big letdowns for me cause I was expecting something zany and off the wall and instead I got half-finished products.

Lake Mungo.

Holy crap, this film is FREAKY. A horror film without jump scares, you say? A film that is actually creepy because of the atmosphere alone?

Hell yeah. This works.
