Red Eye. Pretty good little thriller, obviously written to be a sort of low-budget, dialogue-driven flick. Works well enough, and it's worth a watch, but the ending feels a little rushed, and the final line of the film is sort of groan-worthy.
Still, not too bad. Cillian Murphy is good in it.
Also saw the grand majority of Savages (only missed the first ten or twenty minutes; made enough sense regardless).
I swear to god, this movie is just like The Dark Knight.
And I don't mean the plot is the same or anything, just that the final movie has the exact same effect on me that TDK had. The story is good, and it's generally well-made all around, but there's one aspect that steals the show every time it shows up:
Benicio del fucking Toro.
Just like Heath Ledger in TDK, Benicio del Toro owns the movie every time he appears on screen. He's just so fucking good in it.
There are aspects of the movie I outright dislike, sure. The three-person love story is so goddamn "blah" that I just couldn't bring myself to give a shit about the characters involved. It takes up so much of the focus of the movie, yet it's so unrelatable and forced that all it does is brings things down. Even if del Toro wasn't around, the story wouldn't make the movie bad necessarily, but it's nowhere near as avant garde or interesting as the movie thinks it is. Even if the girl was only involved with one of the guys, and the other was just her brother or something, it really wouldn't have changed much at all.
But either way, Benicio del Toro steps on screen and suddenly everything turns awesome, and suddenly I love this fucking movie. He's The Joker, he's Jack Sparrow... he's the guy that isn't the "star" by way of the script, and yet he's so obviously the fucking star of the finalized flick.
I love scene-stealers like that, and I love Benicio del Toro.
