Another old school Sunrise release. I'm telling ya man, they're the best.

I love the style of it. Sort of on the "low-tech" end of the sci-fi spectrum; it's got giant robots and all that, but they're more like walking tanks rather than the usual Gundam-esque superhero robots in other anime. I love all kinds of mecha, but the tank-style are my favorite (when pulled off properly, that is). Apparently this show was really influential in Japan, yet you rarely ever hear people talk about it elsewhere. Looking forward to getting into it.

Give Ideon a shot then it was litereally 1980, its another old school sunrise anime. It has a big influence on the mecha genre, and shows like Evangelion. Also the kind of series where a character will slap another character thats acting slightly maniacal across the face and say some random dialogue basically meaning "get it together" (yeah, its that old school haha). Seemed good but I only watched the first few episodes, I was surprised at the art styles for the time. I didnt think japan was making anime like this one back then honestly, I was happily wrong. The show is on youtube btw and here is the wiki.

Aside from being my favorite tv show ever (animated or otherwise, doesn't matter), it's also quite possibly my favorite soundtrack from anything as well. So much damn life in every track, not to mention the insane amount of variety present. I can't listen to anymore or I'm gonna break.

I've been wanting to for years, but I swear one day I'll have this tune actually made into a real music box. This, or Memory. I'm still not sure which I like better.

I echo everything you just said. There's no franchise I like out there more than Cowboy Bebop. I've also looked into making a custom music box too. But there are so many songs that would be great for a music box. I would probably flinch every time it stopped though, especially if it were Memory.

I don't know what it is about Yoko Kanno that makes her so great at writing music. She's just a genius. She writes better jazz music than jazz musicians!

Is that Robotech? Can't be... but the animation style looks so similar.

That's Space Runaway Ideon, the anime AG was talking about. Tomino directed it right after he did the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

Here it is again super fast this time lol

I remember in the first episode one of the soldiers was laughing at the woman about the excavation site of the mech and just starts laughing at her when she tells him it woke up and started moving on its own, then she slaps the fuck out of him while hes laughing like maniac. I remember thinking "that was kinda weird..." was that just some kind of trend in the late 70s and early 80s or something?

Yeah, I've had my sights on that one for a while. Looks interesting, and I personally find it hard to go wrong with anime from that era. Not all of it is "good," but goddamn if they aren't usually entertaining.

Unfortunately mentioning Evangelion doesn't help much. :P
I'm kind of lova/hate when it comes to Eva.
I really want to like the show, because of things like Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's design work (fantastic artist, that one), the basic setup of the story, and that opening theme (something about it is just so good). All stuff I love.
But on the other hand, I hate the overall pretentiousness of it, the whininess of Shinji, and the overall blandness of the action scenes. And good god, did it ever get slow and dumb near the end. I know the famous story, the director's wife died or something and it affected how he made the show. But still, it got pretty lame for those last few episodes. The show never seemed to be able to settle on a tone for itself during its entire run, and that did nothing but hurt it for me (one of the same problems I have with Trigun, another show everyone loves, but I'm sorely split on). I may have to watch the show again someday to either reaffirm or debunk these thoughts on it, but I still remember pretty vividly how I felt watching it all the first time.
Strange thing is, I fucking loved End of Evangelion. Still a bit of whininess present, but the action and plot felt so much better than the tv show, and the tone was set in stone right from the start. And goddamn, the bleakness of that ending. So, so freakin' good.
Like I said, I really want to like the franchise as a whole, but it just never managed to grab me in the same way it did for seemingly everyone else. And that kind of bothers me in a way, because there are still a bunch of elements in there that I genuinely love.

Anyway, sorry, end of ranty detour. :P

I never could get into Evangelion. There didn't seem to be much variety to it. My takeaway was that I hate hearing cicadas in anime now, because they were EVERYWHERE in Evangelion. But I like Trigun a lot.

I couldn't get into Evangelion either. But then again, perhaps I've just grown weary of Japan's cliche whiny young male school boy protagonist in big robot genre.

I think so, not sure why though. I do remember it from quite a few shows from that era.

Its been years since I have given eva a watch. Maybe it does try to hard to be fucked up. I honestly could identify with shinji to some degree, hell i had a shirt with his face on it at one point... also had a shirt with Batous face from GitS as well in contrast.
