Speling n gramer

Postby Perfect_Chaos » Sun Nov 03, 2013 1:53 am

my spelling and grammar are absolutely horrible. i wasnt always like this. in high school i was the best goddamn speller you ever saw. when i wrote my papers i had awesome sentence structure. but then something horrible happened.......college! then i was doing papers on microsoft office with spell check and i would google my sentence for sentence structure ideas and after a few years the speling/grammar part of my brain shut down (i guess) i think after relying on google and spell check for so long i lost my touch. this happen to anyone else here? or something similar?

I've gone through this recently. Well, to a degree. If I want to use a word, but don't particularly "know" how to spell it because I haven't used it before and/or seen/heard it used before, my brain usually autopilots my fingers as I type and just use the correct spelling regardless of my conscious mind's level of knowledge concerning the word. Almost as if the key principles behind modern day English are embedded into my brain so well that I have a natural "auto-spell" system. In recent months though, it seems to have deactivated, and I occasionally catch myself staring at a word - sometimes just a common, regularly-used one - and I think to myself "is that right?"

Yeah I'm going through the same thing. Relying on spellcheck and google to make sure I'm spelling the right words. But I also check words I know on the dictionary sometimes to make sure I'm using them right and look up new words.

Since I have all the time in the world to type this message, my grammar is usually good on here unless I'm on my phone. But it's usually lackluster on text messages, chats, and all that stuff cause I'm more concerned about getting my message across than making it look all pudy an' shit.

I often find myself questioning my spelling as I write, but I think as I've been in positions over the years where my spelling and grammar has been tested on a regular basis it' has kept my skills up. It's also helped me get my current job in a game localisation company where it's now my job to look for grammar mistakes...

Kenny is right though, texts, chats, anything with limited characters have meant we're all looking to shorten what we say at the expense of spelling and grammar. What I don't get though is why people continue this on forums where the limit is so high that you don't need to worry about such issues. You get people with incorrect grammar, spelling, and punctuation (slight bit of irony with the opening post there too) who insist that they don't care how they write because their message will get across. Simple things like the difference between "their", "they're", and "there" are constantly mixed up on other forums and they just don't care. I don't understand it...

I'm super anal about this stuff. I was overcome with shame when I found a typo I'd made nine years ago when pasting an old article I'd written into a thread on here the other day. I had to correct it before submitting the post. Better late than never...

Managing a page on Facebook is awful for people like me. You can't edit status updates, so if you didn't proofread thoroughly enough before posting you're tortured by the presence of a duplicated "the" or perhaps a "than" when you meant "that" - goading you, knowing full well you can do nothing about it other than delete the status and resubmit a corrected version minus any likes that have accumulated so far.

If you'd like to put an end to this suffering, just £2 a month can pay for a sign above my monitor saying "No one's two smart to use spellcheck, genus."

In Pages, the delete option is really the edit button.

Trust me, I done it a million times before.

Well, we usually do it at least twice a year. It's kinda like Christmas for us, minus the financially crippling peer pressure to go further than the 2 for 3 deals at Boots.

Ahhhh. I didn't know fan pages had less privileges in that regard. I wonder why that is?
