Organ Donation

So it came to my attention today that organ donation isn't just a case of telling your next of kin that you'd like to do it if you die, you actually have to register. It's pretty simple, and whilst it isn't something I feel particularly strong about, I'm one of those people who doesn't see the point in not being a donor.

I've always said I'd like to do it (well, not always, but opinions on serious life issues are almost always invalid when you're a kid), so I just did a quick search and registered. Took all of twenty seconds. Complex shit. So if anyone's ever felt like they wanted to, but couldn't be arsed getting round to it or whatever, I've got some links here for you to do it:

Australia
Japan
Netherlands
UK
USA

Btw, there's certain countries like France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, etc. where organ donation's "presumed", so instead of registering, you have to "opt out". Italy, on the other hand, was just too fucking difficut to find, so I left it out.

Mitts you're such a humanitarian aren't you? Such a nice young man.
I just registered myself now.
Clean out all my organs I say. If they can be used to keep an injured soldier or war vet alive I'm all for it. Poor bastards need more than what our government provides for them.

Done.

Always meant to get around to it but never did. Considering there's only a minority of people who would object nowadays it really should be a matter of having to opt out.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a Brazilian co-worker a while back. I happened to mention that I wasn't a registered donor, he got a little annoyed and demanded to know why, I replied that it was just because I had never registered, and his annoyance was immediately replaced with confusion at the idea of needing to register to donate your organs.

It is a good idea.

Just because I like to be difficult, some people worry about medical malpractice in regards to being a donor. Your organs may be more valuable than your life (depending on your quality of life) -- to someone who needs them.

I had no idea you had to opt in here in the UK, for some reason i thought that was the default. Signed up now.

Looks like you've done your good deed for the day Mittenz.

They're welcome to mine, even if it's just to feed the pigs for a day.

Edit: Looking at the form (UK), they don't seem to make even the most basic attempt to verify your identity. So how do they know you're not signing up someone else who objects to it? All you'd need to know is their birthday and where they live.

They send a donor card to your address that you're meant to keep on you. So, if someone does do that, you're probably gonna find out. You're also supposed to tell as many people as you know in the event that you don't have your card on you when you die, just to make things run much smoother.

I see, I thought they were just updating a database somewhere. If I'd known they were sending something out I would have asked them to gift wrap it, so that my neighbor at least keeps it unopened till Christmas. That would still give me a month to arrange his death and steal his organs.

It many seem selfish or whatever I guess, but I've never felt comfortable with the idea of sharing my organs from beyond the grave, and most likely never will. I think it should definitely be an opt in thing, not an opt out.

I'm curious, would you receive an organ donation to save your life?

Do you think if you get in a car accident, and they realize you're a donor, the doctor might be less inclined to save you if there is someone else who needs the organs badly?
