Any non stereotypical J Pop out there?

I guess the question is in the topic title but is there any good J-Pop that doesn't involve stereotypical cutesy cutesy girls with super cheesy lyrics?

I came across this song from a game and while I don't know what it's about it's the only Japanese song I like (I often like music I can't understand like Carla Bruni), it just seems a bit different from the norm:

I don't really listen to J-Pop but I really like Kanako Wada -- don't know if it fits your requirements or not but this is a great song.

If I was a mod I'd see you banned for tomfoolery.

DAI is probably more j-rock than j-pop I guess, but...

They've been my favorite band for a good 13ish years, hope you like em.

Bit extreme, or am I missing a joke?

Anyway, I see there's a much larger topic so I'll go there.

P.S. thanks for the suggestions =)

^^ HAHAHAHA! :rotflmao:
one minute you're down, the next, right back up again! (arnold j rimmer)
on subject, i'd like to chip-in, but i'm no expert on 'jpn tunes' just what goes in, and stays in.
...
tbh, regardless of category, demo/party scene and game tunes are my cocaine. (okami and onimusha were decent, but this thread is 'hot coals' territory, and on that note: have fun ladies!) :P

Don't mind him, Rakim just has a taste for that awful squeaky Jpop style you're trying to avoid.
I'm with you though; can't stand that stuff. I still have a taste for Japanese music as a whole, because they tend to have an interesting knack for melody that a lot of western music just doesn't have. But there are few, if any, Japanese artists I listen to that actually qualify as "pop." Even the song you posted is less "pop," I think, and more... enka? Is that the right term? I've never been exactly clear on it, but I think that's the genre.

But yeah, there's a ton of great music coming out of the Japanese industry, you just have to dig for it a bit. Just like in the west, the terrible stuff tends to sit at the top, while the really good stuff sits somewhere below.

Pop doesn't really mean just "Popular Music" -- it's more of a style of music. There is a ton of unpopular "pop" (as in not mainstream). Even still though, I'm sure there's tons of great J-Pop out there and tons of horrible J-Pop. Terrible stuff doesn't always sit at the top though, some stuff just "feels" terrible because lots of annoying people like it. For instance, I think Lady Gaga is incredibly fucking talented and totally worthy of her fame -- despite me not really caring for her music all THAT much -- but she still feels like she's shit because of the rampant popularity and overplaying of her music.

Yeah I was just having a josh. Pop music is the truth, though.

As for the original topic, OL was right you should look into Enka and maybe a little Kayoukyoku. The Japanese music industry had a seemingly limitless supply of songs like the one in the OP during the Shouwa Era. There's a lot of great stuff to be found.

Here's a few that I like that fit into that mold:
