Here is Shenmue's VMU game in action!

No one seems to have ever captured footage of it and rarely does it get mentioned.
It's more of an "app" then a game where you can watch little animations of pretty much all the characters in the game. It comes with Ryo, Shenhua, Ren and Niao Sun and if you want more you'll have to trade in Winning Cans, one for each animation.

If you want to try this out yourself I recommend you grab the Dream Explorer/VMU Tool as it has all the animations on the disc. Saves you the hassle of messing with a dial-up connection to get access to the Shenmue Goodies on the Passport Disc and about 200 Winning Cans.

This is amazing! I haven't seen it before in action. It even has Shenmue's music theme. (Is it the same as mentioned here?)

Yup it is the very same game. Look at Ryo on the display in the picture and compare it to the one in the video.

Like I said eariler somewhere the animations are all you get for your VMU. I really wish they had made a Tamagotchi game with the kitten.

Never knew it existed tbh. Then again, if it's part of the Passport disc I only ever used it once. Didn't see much point in it if you didn't have internet.

I'm confused why Niao Sun is on here, given that she doesn't make an appearance in either of the first two games, I don't even recall her getting mentioned. Any theories as to why this is?

Because she was supposed to be in Shenmue 3.

They put Niao Sun in a quite a bunch of promotional artworks back then. It was rather common to see her.

That and they seemingly decided to specifically give you characters you don't see in Shenmue with the VMU game. Yeah, four characters of wich three aren't in the game. Well Shenhua kinda is but I still consider her a Shenmue II character as you only meet her then.
