ARE YOU GUYS BLIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is a timer at the top o fthe screen, as if hes fighting him.. you dont get that when he teaches you the kick.

That's obviously Tom teaching the Tornado Kick to Ryo. We know that timer isn't in the final game, but maybe that timer was meant to display the current time, or maybe it means how long Ryo have left before Tom interrupts him asking him whether or not he wants to continue practicing. This isn't a mandatory scene, as you can choose not to learn the move.

Mark Kimberly was intended to be a bad guy at one point, though, but they obviously changed the plans on that.

I am still in awe that Sega_Fanboy hasnt beaten Shenmue I yet....being a Sega fanboy, you would think he beat it the next day after its release in 1999-2000.....oh wow....
