I didn't know that either, or forgot. I know in II it's not, I dropped one crate like 20 times to see what would happen once.

That was just me presuming, since he tells you before you start the job that any broken crates comes out of your wages, and there's a screenshot of you fighting in one of the warehouses with a broken crate in it, with the contents of the crate clearly visible.

I dont think that counts? Pretty sure ive broken a create during a fight but never had any punishment for it.

Correct, but the only time it's actually useful is if you manage to waste a day (or maybe two?) unsuccessfully looking for someone to translate the letter, and the old lady will eventually appear in Sakuragaoka. It's a neat little thing to pursue if you're looking to get all the secrets and side scenarios, but completely useless otherwise.
