What is this (the rectangle shaped) thing on the floor?

I assume it's a trap door to the basement.

I wonder if there is some kind of connection to the basement. I never quite figured out where the basement is placed exactly. Is it under the Dojo or does the tunnel lead all the way under the house?

Once again, the attention to detail in Shenmue never ceases to amaze. Like, except for a few instances (the scratches in the basement being the only one I can think of for now, but there could be more), how many times are you really going to be looking at the floor in the game; and in the kitchen of all places?

I figured that it led to the basement as well. Ine-San probably was wondering what the racket was when Ryo was hacking their wall down with the back of an axe.
