Sword Handgaurd/Hazuki Family Crest

Postby Oppy » Wed Sep 14, 2005 8:19 am

Hey guys i had some free time on my hands so i decided to make this while surfing the threads from the dojo, what do you guys think about it?
the tools i used

Aliminium sheet (for the peice)
Jewlers Saw (to cut it out)
emery paper (to sand the edges)
Dremel (for the lines and the texture)

I think i should use emery paper to sand all the scratches off the smoth parts, but i dont know weather to polish it or not. Here are some pics. i have placed it next to some familiar objects so u can get a rough idea of the size.

Its hard to shouw you with the pics but the texture actully looks good when u move it under light.

Please dont critisize it unless you have made something that is better or if you have any ideas to make it better. im thinking about shading the textured area with a bit of black charcole.. feedback guys.

Keep inh mind that im a student, not an expert jeweller or metal worker, and i dont really have any experience in this area.

Hey looks really cool! I've never tried but it's better than I could do for sure. Only thing I might say is that upon close examination a few of the curves are wobbly. Like inside the sword blade hole.
Like you said though you're not an expert at this. So I think great job overall!

Ok will do :D

Your right, the sword handgaurd on my grandfathers replica katana is abot 3 mm thick, but i broough thin sheet metel because it is the first time i have done something like this. and it would be a hell of a lot harder to cut and sand the thicker metal.

Thanks for the ideas n supporst guys, maybe in a few days i will post a pic of an updated/finished product :D

This is fvery impressive, I look forward to seeing more of this. Perhaps if you were feeling ambitious you might make a stab at a metal version of one of the mirrors?

Yeah i could try that, but it would be indredibly hard to engrave the design it with the dremel, it took me about an hour just to engrave the lines and texture into the handgaurd. i could try making a mirror, it would be easy to solder a metal lip around the side and to put a stone in the middle, but its the design that will be chalenging.

Well if this forum had one of those 'respect' features you'd be getting 10 points for this topic.

Fantastic work! The proportions are a little off, but for your first effort you did a phenomenal job. I'm very impressed!

And they say shop class has become obsolete.
