found. Unfortunately, that glitch doesn't work in Shenmue. But actually, there's a way
you can explore the "backstage" in Dobuita freely.
This trick was found shortly after the release of the game and is quite well-known among
Japanese hard-core fans. But, since the procedure is rather complicated and not easy
to trigger, you need to be patient until you get the knack. So, be prepared!
OK, I'll divide the procedure into 3 stages as follows:
Stage 1: How to make Ryo walk in the air
Stage 2: How to go and see the backstage
Stage 3: How to fly Ryo high above the bldgs
Let me start with "Stage 1: How to make Ryo walk in the air." First, check out this video:

Do you see how I triggered it? This is how I did it:
*Stand in the middle of the stairs near the Suzume Park.
*Walk, NOT run, down the stairs to the ground.
*Face the wall to your left by tapping the D-pad twice.
*Pull the trigger to dash as you turn left to the stairs.
*Release the trigger when you see Ryo stuck mid in the stairs.
*Turn around and start running to find Ryo is in the air.
The important thing is doing above actions fluently; with no breaks.
If you can't perform it successfully, try this method I thought up.
*Practice counting 1 to 5 at the same rate as seconds go.
*Perform those actions rhythmically as you count 1 to 5 like this:
1 & 2: Tap the D-pad twice as your count
3: Rest
4: Dash as you turn round to the stairs
5: Release the trigger
Well, this enables your Ryo walk about 4 feet above the ground. But, you can make him
walk even higher in the air. Check out this video:

As you see, all you have to do is going to any apartments while Ryo is walking in the air
and go up the stairs! Be sure not to reach the 2nd floor, though, or the magic will be over.
Also, please remember that hitting "A" button for conversations or purchasing a drink
while walking in the air will result in Ryo's landing on the ground.
