Shenhua and Lan Di.

Gotta say Ren. He is just cool and the report between him and Ryo is just priceless, and I get the feeling that Ryo kinda learns a lot from the man, Ren kinda loosens him up.

Shenhua is also very special, for two games you wondered who she was and then when you meet her she lives up to that hype, though in a very different way than I expected. I kinda thought she would be like a freaking witch of the east or something like that, but then when you meet her she is just a nice, down to earth girl. I like it.

Nobody has mentioned Iwao.
He's Ryo's father, and his participation in Shenmue is really important. He teached Ryo since he was a child; Ryo learnt many things from him.

That makes Iwao one of the most important characters in Shenmue.

And there would be no story without him either.

True. I thought the flashback scenes with him teaching Ryo about certain values were very touching.

Xiuying and Ren

Also the Tomato Convenience girl. If Ryo has asked her to help him out in the Yellow Head Building the local hospitals and morgues would end up flooded with beaten up gangsters

If he went one step further and just brought all of his friends with him (Izumi, Xiuying, Ren, Jianmin, Giuxiang, Hanhui, Eileen etc.) the YHB would be a piece of cake. The chase scenes would actually involve Ryo and his gang running after Dou Niu and the Yellow Heads, rather than the other way around. There would be nobody left on the 40th floor to fight. In fact, they'd probably have just agreed to bring Zhu Yuanda down by the time they'd smashed their way up to the 8th or 9th floor. 'Here, have him- he's not worth the trouble'

Also how about that tasty girl that works in the Thousand White warehouse? The one that wears leathers like another hot girl from Shenmue- the Jeet June Do girl. Add those two to my list

The characters that never seem to have the time to talk to you

The white guy with blonde hair and black guy with the purple t-shirt from the Mad Angels. Comedy duo.

I like the Jamaican guy in Bar Liverpool in S2. He's a sneaky fuck but easy money when you don't play him a third time
