I kind of agree with this, even though I do enjoy it as stand alone music too. I don't think it can even really be called "bad" though, it's true it had to work within the limits that game music had back then, but some of the compositions capture that certain mystique that Shenmue had (or indeed gave Shenmue that mystique it has) so very finely. It balances the tone of the game incredibly well, always hinting at the mystic, even while Ryo is trudging through the mundane streets of doubita.

Bad is an inaccurate word in this instance, but you almost prove my point. It needs the game shenmue for it to work. Out of that context it really isn't anything special.

And if anything that heightens its greatness as a soundtrack composition.

Agreed. Though I think I enjoy listening to it on it's own for precisely the reason that you don't. I enjoy sticking some of it on while I'm studying or the like, specifically because it doesn't yank your attention away from whatever it is your doing and I don't find it distracting. it's simple but yet still has a nice atmospheric feel to it. I can't really listen to most of the types of music I love while I'm working, but something like Shenmue's music (especially the "FREE" songs) goes down well.

For establishing a mood, yes, Shenmue definitely has one of the best musical scores in a game that I've heard. It basically fits the aesthetic. Some of the themes aren't particularly amazing though, but the main ones that everybody always points to (the orchestral ones), are excellent. I can hear some of the musical themes in my head right now.

Personally speaking, I like the various event themes (FREE themes included) too, that nobody seems to ever mention. On a side note: I enjoyed listening to the soundtrack out of the game too, but I think some of the music is only great within the game.

If you weren't so impatient you'd be saying the same thing (whilst simultaneously being more factually accurate) about the Hitman series.

I agree that it is the most atmospheric and emotional music ever made for a game.

such strong recall of the time: the portable Tv, the contentment, as innocent as Ryo himself.

No videogame music moved me so much as Shenmue's.
And the way it mingles with the events of the game... Fantastic.
I remember Yu saying that in many cases the music was created before the actual visual scenes, and it shows.
Plus, the way every place, every scene, every slightly meaningful character has their own tune. Awesome.

Shenmue is singular in terms of musical composition, in this medium.
The care, beauty and significance put in the main themes are unrivalled.

I spent at least a year listening to Shenmue tunes every lunchtime on my walk to the supermarket and back. Everything else on my MP3 player would get old with regular play, but the Shenmue soundtrack is timeless. Every piece is rich with meaning, which just develops the more you hear it.

What not many people know is that every track in the game has lyrics. Here are two examples that were uncovered last year:

It's brilliant.

I really like the morning fog's wave, very emotive. I think the Japanese do emotive music very well.

Consider this:

Here's my approach. Compose some music first. Put all my thoughts into a tune without
telling anything. Then let the staff, planners and scenario writers, listen to it.
And when each of them get some inspiration, I collect them and start shaping them into
a form. Getting ideas from various people including my thought is a good way to create
things with no particular color. Without writing sentences, without drawing pictures,
just music stimulates the imagination to create a new universe. So I made the music first. Read more.

Yu Suzuki first creates the music and (based on that) then creates the universe. So, in Shenmue there is a 1-on-1 relationship between music and the game itself. Shenmue it is a great game, so it has great music, or, Shenmue has great music, so it is a great game. Both of these sentences [and especially the second one, based on what Suzuki-san said (i.e. he first make the music, then the universe)] are valid, only when the inspiration that they have gathered from the music , have taken some excellent form (and reflects the greatness of the composed music)· and this is something that happens in Shenmue.
