Is Shenmue I worth buying a Dreamcast for?

Is Shenmue I worth buying a Dreamcast for?

Postby metroid98 » Wed Jun 17, 2015 12:24 am

I already own Shenmue II on the Xbox and want to play the first one first. I don't really want to have to emulate it, would much rather play on the original hardware. But the problem is most of the other good games on the dreamcast you can now get on steam so I will be buying this console pretty much exclusively for Shenmue. If its not worth buying a dreamcast for I can always emulate it or watch the DVD that came with Shenmue II.

Thanks

Yes, buy it and get the VGA adapter for it.

Take the money you would've spent on a Dreamcast n copies of the games and pledge it to the Kickstarter.

Why would you even suggest that? Pretty selfish, don't you think?

Not to be snarky, but was that a rhetorical question?

Yes, of course it is. Without question. Do you really think there would be this kind of fervor for part 3 if part 1 wasn't a masterpiece?

Lol. I just learned that there is something called "Shenmue Undub". What you can do is download and burn it, and enjoy the original japanese voices (they hired hundred of japanese voice actors as apposed to the dozen english ones if I remember correctly) with english subtiitles. I know I'm going to:

Then from there... download and burn the PAL version of Shenmue 2 for dreamcast so that you also will have the japanese voices with english subtitles. Just my $70 million advice.

I only have my Dreamcast still because of Shenmue. Needless to say, if the game gets ported to PS4, goodbye Dreamcast. So yes, it's worth getting a Dreamcast for.

I emulated it for the first time today. I was really surprised by how awesome this game looks in HD and in widescreen. There are minor graphical glitches, but they aren't a big deal IMO. I'd suggest trying it!

while at it also get shenmue 2 for the dreamcast. it's far superior in every way, even graphics when you use vga. but most of all being able to use your shenmue 1 save file and having english subtitles

If you can get a good deal on a used DC, I would get it. Like, if you get a few games with it (proper classics), then I would go for it. Simply for the reason that the Dreamcast Controller was my favourite controller ever and I love playing Crazy Taxi and Soulcaliber on it with that controller.

Yeah, it works great. It only took a few minute to set up too. The 360 controller works pretty much perfectly! Playing a true wide-screen Shenmue is amazing. Here's a screenshot I took yesterday:
