How quickly can you complete Shenmue?

Postby Benwah » Sat Jun 20, 2015 7:54 pm

i know that Shenmue is meant to be savoured, and all that kind of stuff. But I've got thinking and I wonder how quickly someone can complete the main story? If memory serves me well I think I got it to just below 10 hours. That was no messing around and just completing the main story, I wasn't bothered about any of the completion it's stuff on these runs.

The main reason I ask is I remember the game taking me about 15hrs on my first ever playthrough. As I managed to complete it within 24 hrs of receiving it (I did sleep in the middle). I also remember that the online scoreboards had absolutely ridiculous times on them, like less than 1hr which is just impossible without some kind of cheat. Also howlongtobeat.com has just over 20 hrs to complete it which kind of surprised me.

So what is the quickest you have completed the game in without using a mod?

Neither are alot of games, but the speedrunning community is huge, especially on Twitch. Doing Shenmue speedruns sometime down the line may be neat to do on the Dojo Twitch channel.

Shenmue playthroughs would be so slow by speedrunning standards

There are games that can take half a day for speedrunners to go through.

Wtf. How is that even possible? I didn't know there were any skipping of major sections in Shenmue 2.

Yeah, it's done by skipping cutscenes and using some pretty major skipping glitches (you can basically skip most of Kowloon and go straight into the Yellow Head Building!) While I agree Shenmue should be savoured, puri puri's speedruns are pretty interesting to watch :) It's how I found out you can explore floors 19-39 of the Yellow Head Building just by using the map glitch ;-)

Every time I've played and completed Shenmue (at least thirty times by my estimate), I have always found myself so immersed and locked-in that I always find myself doing things I could easily omit and shave off considerable amounts of time overall (playing games at the arcade, training my moves, going for obscure cutscenes and conversations, etc.), so speeding through the game was never something I'd ever participated in, but the thought of 'Hmm... I wonder how quickly I could complete the game...' has definitely entered my mind. Of course, knowing exactly what to do at any given moment gives me an advantage in that regard.

I would say Shenmue is a twenty-hour game - a typical run clocks in around sixteen or so hours for me - but I could probably do it in half that time if I went from A-to-B instead of A-to-4-to-B-to-11-to-C-to-"Ah, good!"-to-D-to-E :)

I remember when b_ren and Snoopbob would do the annual Shenmueathon, trying to beat both games over New Year's Eve and Day. Miss those days!

I tried doing it this past New Year's. Beat I and didn't get very far in II, because I am old and was tired.
