..that Ryo's attitude changes if you beat Chai at the arcade. Is there any truth to this? If so, what are some examples?

Not really....after you beat him, you can ask people if they saw Chai and Ryo phrases the questions like he's panicked and out of breath. No idea what they're talking about regarding an attitude change though.

As far as I'm aware, nothing really changes if you beat Chai except for Ryo's dialogue in the run-up to the Jimmy QTE - if you converse with people in Dobuita after the fight, Ryo will say stuff like, "Did you see that skinhead?!" in a panicked way, as stated by Ceej - and then everything goes back to normal afterwards.

They're making a big song-and-dance with the whole "free the arcade owner" thing, too; it's nothing more than something that happens in the cutscene after winning the fight, though his dialogue with Ryo does change for a period of time, thanking him for coming to the rescue, etc.

I first heard that Ryo's attitude changes from the first walkthrough I ever read...then I could never beat Chai until a few years ago.

AdamKoralik says that he believes Ryo is a better fighter in Shenmue II if you import a save where you beat Chai, has anyone else verified this?

I can remember Miki says something like "That sounds like my kind of man!" in response to Ryo's description of Chai. Also I think the guy from the water dragon says something like "sounds sexy".

Anyway, it really is worth beating Chai not only to hear the responses, but to also hear Ryo's crazy descriptions of Chai.

Extra dialogue, asking around for Chai. That's pretty much it.
