You can play Shenmue in real 16:9 (even in real FullHD) if you run it on nullDC and use "Extra Geometry".
As the name suggest nullDC actually renders more geometry data and you get to see things that normaly wouldn't fit into the screen. It actually works very well. Sometimes you'll see that buildings and other things around the original screen may disappear because the game doesn't render stuff that is to far out of the view but if you don't go beyond 16:9 it rarely happens. One things that will always happen however is that the black overlays after load times and scenes don't actually overlay the extra portion of the screen. You will see the city in the borders before you see it in the regular portion. But that isn't to much of a problem.
I hope they will give us a good 16:9 conversion with extra geometry like this but without any errors when they port Shenmue to XBLA and PSN. When they actually do so...
