^or the spirit of Iwao, told as if he's trying to remember his life, his son, watching his quest, etc.

We wouldn't feel Ryo's sense of loss if Iwao was our narrator. "Father, I will avenge your..." "I'm right here! Now this is where my boy gets into strife with some schoolgirls."

MiTT3NZ has the best idea. Using an anonymous omniscient narrator would probably make the whole thing easier to write. Especially if you wanted to jump out of Ryo's head and examine scenarios with other characters. Then drop the occasionally hint for the die-hards to pick up on and your gold.

Other potential narrators could be someone who found Ryo's notebook(his kid, some hobo, Joy), a spirit other than Iwao(Sunming Zhao, an ancient chinese god) or a fucking gotcha toy that sneaks in the pockets of all the main characters.

I like that. Someone finds it as an ancient artifact, generations later. "This is the story of Ryo Hazuki, as best we can tell it..."

I like the anonymous source and notebook ideas, as I actually have a concept for a notebook already in place. I just have to tweak the concept a little bit to make it viable to intergrate.

Nice. Works a hell of a lot better than a static background would.

Yu find it that how he made shenmue :) .
I think would be the best Narrator some random person we have no idea who is it would not been as interesting.

Also add hentai is the only reason people play these types of games anyway especially in japan lol :rotflmao:
Actually if the game ends up very good you could promote it on Japanese websites too.

Also the music you choose for each scene is extremely important.

My advice is that if you actually make the game. Create an original story than the one we know that way it would be very interesting. Like a side story?
Or How about Iwao story when he was in China that would be really interesting...
Also how about Ryo came back to Japan you know for that theory about future shenmue title.
Or how about a shenmue fan that went to check out what happened to Ryo lol.
Just make something original and unique to expand the shenmue universe.

I wouldn't call games such as Steins;Gate, Clannad, Little Busters!,and Robotics;Notes hentai... Also just because there's eroge doesn't necessarily mean it's hentai either. That's like calling any movie with nudity in it porn.

My game will feature four entirely new stories and well as four adaptations of what we already know Shenmue's origins to be. It will be released in four parts, each containing one new story and one retelling.

So, I've animated some more backgrounds (Originally captured by Ziming). Worry not, these are just .Gif versions of the animations and thus the resolution and frame-rate are seriously compromised. They're actually much better quality in-game. I could upload an HD video to youtube, but, it'd only be 1sec long and well, who wants that?

First, (WIP Golden QR at night. I'll have to redo some of this, mainly the right street. I also have to animate some lights from buildings. There's only one done in this version, and I don't think you can even tell.

Image

You probably can't tell but each light is very SLIGHTLY off balanced to the rest.

Second, Hazuki Dojo bathed in sunlight.

Image

It may be hard to believe but this actually took me longer to do than Golden QR. (this took many hours, the former only a few) I couldn't figure out what exactly to do with the light and the clouds. Since the scene was already majorly lit, I did what I thought best, and just did a small animation, and then there's the I thought it would be weird to just have static clouds, so I tried to do something with that.

Also, I'm using GImp, (laugh, if you will) which, I'm still learning how to use actually.

Anyway, I should have another video update within a week or two or so.

What's done so far.

11 animated backgrounds
Message Box animations and design
12 Pages of script (story) that includes various branching paths.

I'd refrain from using any backgrounds with NPCs in it. Animated backgrounds + static characters would just make it look daft. Maybe just have the odd sprite walk across the screen every now and again when in a populated area Carmen Sandiego-style? That way it'll add a bit of life to the scene.

Think it looks great. Tho yeah NPC's are tricky. Some games pull it off but look at a series like Ace Attorney and all you ever see if the 2 character exchanging dialogue and the background is just that with no people. Best leave them out. I know legally you can't make a profit off this but I'd be willing to make a "donation" to a project like this for 10-15$

It's easily done. NullDC + Shenmue + Screenshot for the backgrounds and for the sprites, get the models & skins and just pose them with summat like Daz3D with a plain background that you can easily "magic erase" away for the movement frames. Hell, you could even just screenshot a profile view of an NPC, get rid of the background, and use manipulation tricks just for the top half of the bodies to make it looks like their arms are swaying as they walk.

Great I am looking forward of that original stories.
Maybe you can make a game that the main character is not Ryo. It could Ren or Joy.
It would be really interesting a story using other cheacters as Main here some examples:
1)Ren story of how he become leader of heavens.
2)Lan Di in his way to become a leader or his quest to get revenge for his father death.
3)Gui Zhang on his way to find Ryo after his injury recovery.

There just ideas for future projects if you plan to release more chapters latter. It would be amazing because that way we can learn more about the other characters.

Those backgrouds look very amazing! more than I expected I love the lighting effects makes the game look alive.
I want the 1 second HD video lol.
this project seems to me the most promising more than the other projects that were been made but never finished.
Because even if the game is just a graphic novel it will focus on the story of the game and getting to know more about the characters that is what graphic novels are about.
