Just a few text files and a Japanese audio track probably saying it's a GD-ROM.

I'll check it out again this evening to see if I can rip any content out of it.

Seems they put a heavy focus on Joy when advertising II.

Take away everything after "watch," you mean!? Well, now I figured out what was wrong. Thank you for your help.

Yes, that's the movie you find on disc 4 of Shenmue II. But, that was revealed at GAME JAM, SEGA's private game show, in April, 2001, five months prior to the release of the game and had a huge impact on us back then. The Dori-Maga GD followed it in June, three months prior to the game release, and it was really a jewel to the fans.

Ah, memories... More than 11 years since then? Wow...

After a bit of research it turns out I have no idea how to rip video from a GD-ROM demo disc.

But thanks Kiyuu for the link and thanks to Ziming for upping such a massive video collection.

This makes me the saddest :( The fact that, even if Shenmue was re-booted, it will never get promoted like it did in Japan back in the day. I wonder if all the marketing and promotional costs were included in the $43 million figure.

Kiyuu, did you attend many of these promotional events? Do you think that Shenmue could ever become popular in Japan again? Because despite all of these special events, sales still were not impressive enough :-k

When Shenmue was under development, it was advertized as a "seven-billion-yen project," and Yu-san translated the amount as "70 million dollars" in this video:

Though I'll never know the exact breakdown, I assume the considerable amount of money was poured into the promotion of the first game. It was really a series of extravagance; having "the Shenmue Premiere" at several locations with free promotional goodies for every attendees, giving away "What's Shenmue VHS," "What's Shenmue demo disc" for SEGA game buyers, lots of TV advertisements, etc. They spent much less for Shenmue II, though.

I'm not really a gamer, and didn't play Shenmue until a year later from the release. Soon after I got this unexpected Shenmue fever, Shenmue II was announced. That's when I started watching over Shenmue. I attended "Game Jam" and "AM2 Summer Festival," where Shenmue II was promoted by Yu-san and Shenmue casts themselves. (I also went to "Game Jam II" next year to see Yu-san again.)

Well, it's true there still are some die-hard Shenmue fans in Japan waiting for the sequel, but it couldn't be sure if Shenmue become popular again, if it once was, in Japan. That's why SEGA's management has been reluctant to give a green light, I'm afriad. However, I really don't mind if Shenmue III wouldn't be a smash hit, as long as I can see the ending of the saga. All we need is a miracle here?

Don't give up hopes for a miracle. Tech has advanced every day since. So much pioneer work in Shenmue, sure SEGA licensed the CRI middleware for sound and video compression, but from todays view it is crazily expensive and time and resource consuming to write everything from scratch, the game engine, music formats and so on. Today you just license a 3D engine and add mp3/WAVE music and that's it. They even had to puzzle and trick a lot to have it fit on 4 GD-ROM. I think every day it gets cheaper and easier to make Shenmue 3.

I had given up hope on Duke nukem a decade ago. And then suddenly a miracle happened. Why not for Shenmue?
