My take on the translation of Chinese names

Shenmue I ultimately had it right even if it wasn't technically correct.

Both Japanese and Chinese names are written with the last name first in those languages.
However, in translation, it is universal to write Japanese names like Western names, but not Chinese names.

This is a pretty much universal convention. Part of the reason is because many Chinese take Western names, and usually write their Western name first, when required to provide a name in that format, followed by the family name and then their Chinese first name. But it's also simply because Japan has been more culturally engaged with the outside world, while China has been a relatively self contained society.

So really, the first game was correct to make it Ryo Hazuki and Tao Lishao and Zhu Yuan Da. I think most players are intelligent enough to pick up from context which names are first and last.
