I'll just copy and paste my (typically cautious) interpretation of it here:

Now, we don't want to get anyone's hopes up. As exciting as this sounds, the news is still rather vague and ambiguous, at least until we're able to gather more details. But we promised to pass along whatever came out of the Monaco Anime Game Show this weekend, so please take this with a grain of salt for the time being:

As you may recall from an earlier post, Sebastien-Abdelhamid had asked fans on Twitter to suggest questions that he would ask Yu Suzuki at the MAGS convention. Well, here's a new tweet from the interviewer following that session:

"Yu Suzuki déclare penser au Crownfunding type Kickstarter pour financer Shenmue 3 ! #MAGS"

https://twitter.com/SAbdelhamid/status/ ... 5822728192

This roughly translates to:

"Yu Suzuki declares he is thinking about crowdfunding such as Kickstarter to finance Shenmue 3! #MAGS"

A thrilling prospect for sure, but before we get carried away let's acknowledge a few things. First of all, while it still inspires hope, it says he's only thinking about it. But most importantly, we don't yet know the context of these comments. We don't even have a direct quote. Did Yu volunteer this statement, or was he coaxed into politely going along with an idea presented to him on the spot? We simply don't know at this stage, so we hope to see a video or at least a full transcription of the interview before deciding how seriously to take this tweet.

We have said before that we believe Yu would be more open to the Kickstarter concept than the corporate suits at Sega. You can read our previous comments here:

On this latest development, we'll keep you posted.

I wonder how many people would continue on the forums once the saga is finished. Many people their whole existence on SD has been trying to get SIII. I remember once The Last Story was announced for the US I felt lost and not sure what to do as for just a year all y energy was focused on Operation Rainfall.

Be interesting to see how the forums change if they do once SIII is released.

Excuse me whilst i jizz all over the place. Whats the man got to lose on this? Just put YS Studios or whatever his team is called, forward as the developer and let the dolla flow in. But even if he does decide to go the Kickstarter route, you know the guy will take a year or two to come to a decision.

Are Japan and China aware of Kickstarter, and what it is? Just asking from a potential revenue perspective. Either way, it would be huge news in the gaming world, just how Duke Nukem was.

I'm still not sure if we'd have enough people to help fund the thing.

SD alone might not. Just remember Shenmue fans stretch far beyond us. Not all post on forums. There is always hope.

I'm quite confident a Shenmue 3 kickstarter would receive the largest pledge we've yet seen.

100% guaranteed. Not a shadow of a doubt in my mind.

There's obviously no way of predicting how big it would be, but so long as the target was sensible (ie, only the shortfall that couldn't be met by standard funding, not the whole whack), I think no game stands a better chance of success on Kickstarter than Shenmue III.

Are we expecting a video interview with Suzuki to be uploaded from the show?

I don't know but I hope so. We need to ascertain with our own eyes and ears the context of that paraphrased comment, at the very least.

I'm a little weary of large quote posts so a video would be nice

Hopefully this gets elaborated upon. Reassuring nonetheless. Now it's time for fans to put their money where their mouth is. This would certainly be the most ambitious Kickstarter in the videogame world since the trend started, and also potentially could be the most publicized. It'd be fantastic if some developers out there who've been inspired by Shenmue could kick up donations as well...

There's also the negative side to this...as it stands, Shenmue 3 is just as up in the air as it has always been. I was hoping some progress had been made in getting Sega to consider it or at least cough up some info on Shenmue HD.

At Nice Airport at the moment.
My native French translater (during the conference) was talking about Kickstarter as last resort.

But I was a bit Deduced about the girl next to him.

Pfff...

Great weekend! Do have video. But I'm sure there are other people who are faster than me and have better quality.

I'd be happy to participate, but we're talking about one of the most expensive games ever made. To get it done to the same standards as the two previous one, you're need a massive money pool. I'm not sure we're big enough of a community, even if we had all of Reddit at our side.

This is a good point. We've certainly seen developers donate to other Kickstarters in the past.

One thing I believe we all have an obligation to be vigilant about right now is the temptation for certain people to launch their own crowdfunding campaigns off the back of Yu's comments, fooling (deliberately or otherwise) other fans into assuming that it's officially endorsed by Yu. We need to watch out for this happening and stamp it out quickly when it does, so that people don't get their fingers burned before any legit crowdfunding begins.
