Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Game Studios has responded to tweets about Shenmue returning to their platform. His replies were not at all favorable to the series making a return to the Xbox One. Stating he would rather fund first party games Microsoft owns. He does keep the Shenmue series in high regards and recognizes the ongoing support for it.

Sony is our only hope or a third party publisher.

If it ever does get developed as an exclusive for the PS4 this decision will come back to bite him in the ass.

Shame he even has to shoot it down like that. Its one thing to keep all options on the table but another to wipe them away. This definitely just makes Sony look more gamer centric and pro Shenmue than ever. Glad we have atleast 1 first party on our side. Nintendo could deliver too but I think they are more worried about still delivering on the lack of their own first party IP's on Wii U.

It'd be a death sentence anyway, so good. Then again, as much as I want it to be profitable, we're likely looking at a one and done type of deal with a Shenmue III (though it all really depends on the direction).

Sounds like he is simply saying they would rather fund their own IPs rather than 3rd party and with a game like Shenmue can you blame them? Remember it was just the other month he was saying he would suggest it to their 3rd party team.

I don't expect any of the 3 to say to SEGA they will fund one of the biggest commercial flops in gaming.

Still think that if Sega every try again it will be best to so it as episodic content for both XBox/PlayStation consoles currently on the market.
Maybe give chapter one for free to get attention?

Shenmue III on its own is going to flop this late on and as a Shenmue fan I would much prefer to be able to play the whole thing on one console.

And as I've said before I just feel that multiplatform is the best route for the game. Don't need top of the range graphics just a HD remake will do if its going to be a digital release.

The irony is, for many gamers Shenmue 3 would be a new IP.

I can see it being like releasing Mass Effect 3 on the Wii U.

And that was a more popular and recent title.

Being told that he's not interested is much better than being left in the dark. At least we now know where microsoft stands. We can be angry at them for the lack of interest but at least the man was honest.

Well if Shenmue III is ever getting made Sony is the way it's gonna go. Not a huge deal that Microsoft doesn't want to have the game on their system I'd say.
