So does sega still own the name shenmue? Or did they lose it?

Lol don't pretend you didn't think of every argument possible to say Shenmue 3 wouldn't and couldn't happen because there wasn't enough love from the public. I said and I been saying all they have to do is give up an official announcement and all shenmue fans will crawl out of the woodwork. And that's what happened.

I may have been quiet but I never gave up on Shenmue. Now let's get the HD remakes out too.

We all had to deal with the last fourteen years in our own ways. Some of us had to--understandably--push the idea away, because when you're so emotionally invested in something, you sometimes need to step back. It can interfere with your life, it can bring you down.

According to the FAQ on the Kickstarter, SEGA is allowing YS.Net to use the license.

sega has had these opportunitie's in the past as well and always failed. also I believe they lost all shenmue code from that time I believe I read somewhere so it would be enormously expensive and time consuming to do it as well.

SEGA did not have any kickstarter projects as far as i remember. So far Shenmue was a money killing machine if you look at development costs. With kickstarter the thing becomes risk free - reach the goal: Got enough funds. Do not reach the goal:Forget about it. So it's not unlikely that they will let Yu Suzuki repeat the thing with HD remakes if Shenmuen 3 funding exceeds their expectations. Afaik SEGA preserves ALL source codes and assets (textures/sounds) at their headquarters in Shinagawa (Actually 15 minutes from my mother-in-laws house, lol)... Never heard the story about the lost sources and prolly an urban legend.


And yeah SEGA (With their parent company SAMMY) still owns the Shenmue trademark, see the Q&A on the kickstarter campaign.

Amazing news. I still can't believe this is happening.

BUT, I take caution and would urge others to do the same. With such a low budget, even if they have backers, total budget would probably not exceed 20 million. So with such a low budget, do not expect a crazy high end open world game like GTA5. My best hope for this game is that it looks very much like Shenmue 2 with the same amount of interactivity and hidden gems.

I think this is more like a swan song for all us fans, for Suzuki to finish the series for us, in a cheap way. And however it turns out, I think we should be grateful!
