Can you even do that? That's a shame. It's not like we know to what extent Sony really are going to help out. We shouldn't get all cocky about it now.

Yeah they don't take the money until the kickstarter ends so until then you're free to withdraw your pledge.

I disagree with any notion that you don't have to play Shenmue 1 or Shenmue 2 to appreciate Shenmue 3.

Shenmue 1 was nothing short of a masterpiece.

^ but I do agree with him trying to make it seem as though you don't have to. Considering that re-releases of the older games may be out of their hands (considering Sega) and that he probably wants this new game to reach as wide as an audience as possible.

It's a chronological game. This isn't Final Fantasy.

Might as well recommend people to download and watch Breaking Bad on shuffle.

How about saying "Buy a beat up sega dreamcast from the internet or craigslist and the games."

Are you forgetting that he said there are recap videos for people who want to catch up on the story?

Sony will provide "some funding" and marketing support. But please people, let's not rest on our laurels and get cocky.

I agree with Adam Boyes strategy to be honest. I think this Kickstarter was the best way to get this started. It's the way Team Yu has espoused from day one. And it's clear, the MORE we put into this, the BETTER this game will be.

If you started out like that, you wouldn't even be a member of this forum.

Dreamcast + VGA adapter + Shenmue is something any one who's to play this needs to try.

edit: well I guess you joined in 2012, maybe you did play shenmue 2x first. I definitely plowed through that game, but it wasn't nearly as magical.

As I said before, I honestly think Sega will chime in with some kind of Shenmue re-release soon enough. So I think it'll at least be accessible to those haven't played it soon enough.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be ideal to play the first two games before Shenmue III. All I'm saying is that from a commercial standpoint it makes sense to advertise your game as one that doesn't require anything else to be enjoyable. He's not going to say "I'm pleased to announce Shenmue 3, but please make sure you find yourself a Sega Dreamcast and play Shenmue 1 and 2 first, otherwise you just aren't going to enjoy this new game."

Regardless, saying that it's best to play Shenmue 1 and 2 first is something nobody can actually claim. Quality of experience is largely biased and you cannot have one other than your own. I played Shenmue 1 on Dreamcast and then Shenmue 2 on Xbox, and I believe my experience to be best because it is the one I experienced. But is it truly better than the experience had by someone who played both on Dreamcast? Or someone who played 2 before 1? That cannot be answered. All I can say for certain is that the experiences would be different but I cannot say which would be better.

In the meantime he is doing what he can with the means he was given. He isn't going to say you have to play the first 2 games because it would be very difficult for a wider audience to be able to play them seeing that they're on dead consoles and have shot up in price so instead he's offering the next best thing. Obviously playing the first 2 is better but to catch up on the story the recap videos are sufficient. It worked well enough for the Yakuza games.

As for your other comment I played shenmue 1 first when it was released in Europe though the second is by far my favourite game.

I'm still well hyped up right now! It's only just really sinking in. Shenmue 3 isn't just a myth anymore.

Two years seems like a long time now, but trust, two years goes so fast. And even when it does come, I think it'll at least be a good two to three months of me just looking at the box and never going on the internet, and after that I'll start replaying the original games. I think I'll pass on the demo too. That reminds me, we need to bump that old thread about how you would play Shemue 3 when it comes!

Shame I'm not in London at the moment. I really feel like going out and celebrating this.

Same man! It feels like we really need a UK Shenmue meet up. I want to tumultuously celebrate this news, but everyone in the real world I've desperately tried to preach to today just thinks I have mental problems...

We'll definitely do it soon though!

I've never spent $300 so fast in my life. I might have upgrade to get the $500 version though...

Every developer says you don't have to have played the previous game when working on a sequel as it lowers the chance of new people thinking about jumping in.

Honestly though after this Kickstarter and we know what the extra stretch goals are we should work on tweeting at Sony about I&II HD. They take the building the list thing very seriously so let them know we want to have our entire journey on Playstation and not just Shenmue III. Let them know we want to carry over our saves like we did on the Dreamcast.

After the Kickstarter is over a tweetathon should be arranged for later in the year.
