What happens if Disney bought Sega?

Postby Taufiq91 » Sun Jun 22, 2014 10:48 pm

If there is one company that Disney would be willing to buy, it's Sega.

And considering that Disney would be interested in having Sonic, Miku and Teddie next to Wreck-It-Ralph, Chewbacca and Rocket Raccoon, i would think that Disney would be able to resurrect dead franchises like Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia.

I mean, just look at this:

Who doesn't want to see Ryo team up with Iron Fist and Daredevil to defeat Lan Di? Hell, a Kingdom Hearts level based on Kowloon Walled City would be fantastic to explore.

The question is: If Disney bought Sega, would Shenmue be one of the franchises they would like to resurrect? Would Disney allow Yu Suzuki to make Shenmue III under Disney/Marvel?

Even if Disney was remotely interested in SEGA, they'd only be interested in Sonic because he has universal appeal like Star Wars and Marvel.

And even then, Sonic isn't as big as those two giants. Sonic primarily attracts children and man-children. Marvel and Star Wars appeals to everyone. That's what Disney, and all mega-corporations, want. A universally appealing franchise or a gold mine of franchises to make tons and TONS of money off of.

Shenmue doesn't have that same level of appeal to warrant an investment from a billion dollar corporation.

For me, Shenmue can be revived as a Marvel story rather than Disney's in case Disney buys Sega.

I can see Shenmue under the Marvel brand, which could also lead to a MCU film. Ryo's story does start to get Iron Fist-esque at the end of Shenmue II.

I'm not a comic book guy to know this, but I don't think Shenmue fits into Marvel's repertoire. I know there's the whole magical mystic thing that was introduced at the end of Shenmue II but we don't know the extent on how it was going to be implemented in future titles.

Even if they decided to go along with it, Shenmue would be heavily altered to be less detective-like and more action packed with magic and super powers abundant. It wouldn't be the same game you know.

This is all just some "hypothetically speaking" fun, right? Or is it a serious suggestion that Disney would be remotely interested in SEGA?

I don't see Disney buying Sega, it's not something I think they'd ever do. Even if they did they probably wouldn't touch Shenmue at all.

Interesting thought. Well, the name Shenmue simply wouldn't work. Children would get too bored midway through the name and stop saying it, stop watching it and most importantly stop buying merchandising. So it would have to be called "Orphaned" and would tell the story of Robert(kids today just wouldn't be able to connect with a character named Ryo) who grew up in a castle/dojo in Japan, but not Japan, more of a magical kingdom inhabited by white people. Robert's father was murde...errr...had his life ended when the villain Lance threw him off a cliff into some fog so we don't see the body hit the ground. Lance would also provide lovable comic relief just so viewers wouldn't be too scared of him. And they should probably make him a minority too or at least a dark-skinned white guy. Robert would also have a tag-along accomplice Pheeny the phoenix (plush toys and t-shirts available at all major retailers). At some point Lance would also kidnap Robert's love interest Noami. Eventually Robert would defeat Lance by throwing him off a cliff into some fog so...well you know.

And there would be lots of musical numbers.

You may have noticed the lack of Fuku-san. Because even Disney knows how to avoid some mistakes.

I can see it now Ine-San sweeping and singing in the kitchen, Ryo as Peter pan, LAN-di as captain hook, amazing musical numbers.

And Fuku-San masturbating in his bedroom....

Its impossible, Sega is in well financial state right now, so price will be pretty high.
