Indeed. I'm sure that they did detailed studies of Kickstarter statistics in advance. So they'll be able to extrapolate this data to potential real sales.

You're probably right about that magic number. It's a bit of a psychological thing in a way but breaking a record would certainly garner extra attention.

Don't expect much help from sony.


To me it seems that sony will give just enough to make it go to the next "stretch goal".


For example if Shenmue 3 gets $9 million but Yu Suzuki needs $10million for his real vision, ill expect Sony to step in.

So yeah don't expect much.

I would guess that Sony will spend just enough money to ensure a version of the game comes out on their console, then advertise it very aggressively as a game 15+ years in the making. Doesn't matter to them if the game has an adequate budget. They are going to get their quick buck from licensing fees and are able to walk away happy. Anything with "Shenmue 3" and "15+ years in the making" is going to sell a number of copies on its own, regardless of quality.
