Guinness world record flawed?

Postby Ryno4 » Fri Jan 29, 2016 4:45 am

Hi guys. I was sat here thinking about he amazing world records set by the Kickstarter. In particular, I was thinking about the 'fastest Kickstarter to reach $1millon'.

From what I can see, it's talking about the amount 'pledged' in that time. As you'll remember, the original jacket and watch were pledged for at the time, but not actually taken at the end. Was this taken into account when the record was broken, or was it it ignored?

If this was the case, could I make my own Kickstarter for a game, have absolutely massive tiers for £1,000,000 and break the record straight away? (I'm stupid enough to try it). If this is completely wrong I apologise, I haven't done anywhere near enough research into the record.

As expensive as those items were, I don't think they constituted a significant amount of the funds earnedthat night.

That's true, although the official time in the record books for reaching the million may be wrong if you only count actual donations.

They wouldn't consider OP the record holder if one person pledged at $1,000,000 and later withdrew the funding, especially if the project wasn't funded in the end. You're right that the speed was helped to an extent by troll pledges that were later removed but they were not a huge percentage of the money overall and there's no way to know which early pledges ultimately went away. In the end more than $6.3 million stayed with the project so it is known that many people truly intended to go through with their pledges.

I remember someone on GAF saying $1 million+ of donations were troll pledges before the KS closed. The level of satisfaction when we finished on $6.3 million was immense.

But no, the record isn't flawed.

Maybe the speed of the pledges will be slightly off, but I imagine with how much was donated in that first 24 hours, it wouldn't be too off.

And just to clarify, I would never try to beat the record with troll pledges. I was just using it as an example haha. The funding for the game was immense,I just hope Yu gets to make the game he wants regardless of the budget.
