Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Update 48

The best thing in this "update" is they've finally realised how horrible is Ryo's new model, so they used his old Dreamcast model in their last slide instead ... and that's one step in the right direction.

If the PayPal campaign had been planned from the start, rather than introduced in response to fan demand, then I'm sure these rewards would have been labelled "backer exclusives" instead of "Kickstarter exclusives." It's unfortunate that they now require a poll to escape the restraints placed upon them by those early semantics, but hopefully it will work and they'll be able to move on with sharing the love amongst ALL backers, regardless of platform.

When I think about this update, I've the strange feeling that someone is looking over my shoulder...

I mean, it seems to me that the team in charge of the Kickstarter is more reactive than proactive.

They put together the slides of the CHUAPP presentation with obvious typos, because that was the least backers were expecting since the pictures and videos leaked on the internet.

Another thing is the whole rewards debate (PC, upgrades, KS exclusive).
Don't you think this poll should have been set up at least 2-3 days ago?
The poll duration is 24 hours, which means they could have proposed new rewards for PayPal before or during the december 3rd Tweetathon, in other words when the community was more aware of the Slacker Backer campaign.

That said, this poll means we will probably have a new update shortly... and then there is the PSX 2015 coming so who knows, I'm somewhat confused, but maybe there is a logic behind all this clumsy way of running the end of the Slacker Backer campaign.

There is mention of "chapter 7" nowhere. Lol don't play with my heart like that because semi-part of chapter 7 = another cliffhanger.

The composition for Shenmue 3 has been finalized, and will begin with Chapter 5 as the continuation of Shenmue 2, to move on past Chapter 6.

To me seems that there will be some "chapter 7" in there, but who knows.

What confused me more was them omitting chapter 3 when talking about Shenmue 2. I'm literally more confused as to the chapter structure of Shenmue 2. With the amount of typos, and poor translation, i'm not even sure whether they know either

I'm indifferent here. Is this an update, considering bar the poll, we already know all the information offered.

Other than the fact that this is an English communication of that information, it's also fair to say that not everyone is aware of this presentation or what it contained. It's a bit unfair to discount the info for not being 100% new. This is an update for the Kickstarter backers.

I assume this was in the context of the 11 VFRPG Chapters. As chapter 3 there is the cut train chapter, it definitely makes sense not to mention it, as it doesn't really happen in the story we got (Seems as though the boat chapter isn't being taken into account anymore, either).

The deleted Chapters 3 and 4 in Shenmue are likely to be the Chapters 3 and 4 from Virtua Fighter RPG (Su Zhou and Shanghai). I no longer think that the train counts as a chapter in the current story cut. It probably did as an extra-chapter when Suzuki talked about 16 chapters instead 11.

I think they've been using that render on materials for a little while, actually. It holds up pretty nicely though.

But anyway, it's nice to see higher res materials from the expo in China. Everything is starting to look nice, despite Yu acknowledging during the showing that they haven't really developed assets with the right look for Guilin yet.

Few typos and grammatical errors in the body of the KS text though, but whatever. They definitely should have had the poll earlier though. Awesome Japan are definitely... slow on the uptake.

Yeah since the Kickstarter when Suzuki has been talking about chapters it's been along the lines of the 11 chapters of VF RPG/the concept art shown at GDC, like when he talked about Chapter 3 being set on a train during the Nico Nico broadcast (and as is the case with the concept art). Chapter 4 of the concept art shows 4 fighters, one of who might be Lan Di, but I assume the other 3 fighters were changed to the street fighters Ryo must defeat in Kowloon, and Disc 4/Guilin was the beginning of Chapter 5 as you can see Shenhua and Ryo in the forest on the Chapter 5 concept art. In this context Shenmue III being two chapters might mean it'll be about the same length as Shenmue II which in this context is Chapter 2 and bits of 4 and 5.

This is mirrored and compressed to the right of Shenhua as well for some reason; don't know why, think it'd look better without that being tacked on at the end.

Still, happy we got this update, still hopeful we get something at PSX. Suzuki sounds really impressed with UE4.

All in all, I think we should be careful about how we use the term 'Chapter' in this series from now on. There have been a few different chapter structure over time... Gets kinda confusing.
