Shenmue 3 & E3 2017 - UPDATE - Confirmed will NOT be at E3

(Chapter 7 and beyond)

Honestly, I never understood that Sonic Adventure port. The original PC version from 2003 ran far smoother and could do 1080p widescreen (something SEGA said was impossible to do with the port).

It freaks me out a little to be honest. SEGA were so incompetent with that port and it makes me worry that they'll try the same thing with Shenmue; that way they can cash in on the hype and not have to do the stuff Peter mentioned. I really hope I'm wrong, but it would be such a SEGA thing to do.

And that's my exact point. Such a Sega thing to do. Sega.

I get that it was nice of them to let Yu have the license... but on the other side of that, the argument still remains that this franchise, despite breaking all sorts of records almost 2 years ago, was being overlooked and shat on come every opportunity. And Ben Harbourne, oh ummm were Shenmue ha. Ha. Fuck off and sell your cans of deodorant door to door.

Sega have shown no love for Shenmue in 15 years. My expectations for them to change and surprise me with remasters filled with love is very low at best.

Regardless, it shall be interesting to see how it pans out.
I'm not going to jump to any conclusions just yet.

Bringing up that first wave of Dreamcast ports is a little irrelevant now, considering SEGA have done a better job since on other titles.

In fact, did we forget that they went back and cleaned up the PC versions a little bit a few years ago? I would say they're more embarrassed by the quality of those ports than complacent and eager to repeat the performance.

Peter wrote: That's very true, but here's the issues I have...

(Bear in mind, I don't have an absolute clue about game development.)

- Shenmue is a HUGE game. It ain't no Crazy Taxi, so it will be a huge task for a development studio to do.

- god knows how many textures there are in that game. Buildings, props etc. But all of those would have to be cleaned up or rescaled?

-Shenmue has an awful lot of individual items in game, that can be picked up and examined at close range. All of those would need to be redone. Including toy capsules, and there are hundreds of those alone.

-character models would need redone, or touched up. Both in game and cutscene.

-in game menu and main screen would need to be done in terms of look

-all of the audio would need to be cleaned and upscaled to today's standards. It's badily compressed. That's A LOT of NPC dialogue alone, never mind the main characters, or the sound effects, OR the main tracks.

-also the Japanese audio, as well as the implementation of the dual audio voice overs people want.

-also what people want is rid of the tank controls so implementation of full 360° movement via analogue stick, which never existed before? That would require fresh mocap

-all of the above needs coded for at least TWO systems (PC and PS4). So that's a serious tonne of code to be written

All this, on top of licensing issues, which Sega are arguably stalling over? I'm sorry to be a buzz kill, but as the sands of time run out as we get closer to Shenmue 3, I can't help feel that Sega will let us down, as they always have in the past.

I want to believe, and as I've asked before on here, if someone with actual game development knowledge come in and walk me through it, both how a remaster is made, as well as reassuring me that Shenmue can be remastered easier than my mind can processing then I would be extremely grateful, and get back on that hype train.

You are absolutely right.
Right about everything regarding the huge amount of work in order to make not only a remaster, but a great remaster/remake of Shenmue.

Still, there is a glimmer of hope IF SEGA (too) is keeping cards close to their chest.
My hope is that Jurgen Post statement about licences in Shenmue from the September 2016 interview, was a way to buy time. My hope is that there was already (or there were about to start) at the time, a good team developing the remasters of Shenmue I & II. My hope is that SEGA aimed at end 2017 for a release date, prior to Shenmue 3 in any case.

Either way, I think that the moment of truth can't be so distant.

I... keep hope that they're listening.

They've listened to the PC ports petition that netted us the recent release of Bayonetta and soon Vanquish too. I'm going out on a limb that it had way less social media impact than #SaveShenmueHD.

There is no need to redo all textures and character models, the problem is the ancient source coding.
Shenmue II is probably the easiest of the two to port into modern platforms because it was already ported to Xbox.

Normally this wouldn't mean anything, but the reply was from Joel; who gives more informed and reliable answers than the others who handle the Kickstarter questions.

Do you guys think we could get a hint through the backers updates about E3?

His answer kind of sounds like a "I'm not saying anything, but someone else might." sort of thing.
I don't think Cedric's wanting to say anything this time. And that's fair enough, whatever plans they have (or don't have) right now can change last minute. If I remember correctly, he was teasing Shenmue at PSX and that caused a lot of backlash against him so he probably wants to avoid that this time.

I actually suspected that. Like, an actual announcement about something being shown at E3 (Shenmue 3 related) but I don't know if Sony would go for it. It's not as if everything has to be a surprise.

Yea. Know the feeling. He was probably told the same things we were.

I think it's encouraging that they seem to have at least discussed it to the point where Cedric thinks they'll most likely announce it beforehand.

The only worry now is that we get absolutely no talk about E3 in the next update or through early June. It'll definitely throw cold water on any speculation that we'll see Shenmue III, even though there's still the chance of a surprise appearance.

The hype will be white-hot if they do announce an appearance at E3, though. The Dojo livestream will be immense if things work out like that. We'll hopefully find out what the state of play is if Joel was right and another update drops at the month's end.

At least if they no-show E3 we can put the final nail in the coffin on a 2017 release.

Seems he's the fellow who designed the mirrors that Yu was presented at the San Francisco dinner in December last year.

He got a signed picture and a letter from Yu, at least, as far as we know.

Well, regardless of what it is, it is nice to see exposure increasing and the hype train wheels really beginning to turn as each day passes.

Cedric is playing it safe, but I feel better about III's appearance at E3 with each tweet or response from the KS folks regarding updates forthcoming.

It's a really good chance to gain much needed exposure and additional funding to secure further stretch goals, such as a fully fleshed out combat system.

HD Remasters...I'm not convinced. It's Sega and I mean..if $6.45 million in funds
(Not including private investors) isn't enough to convince them the market is there and *has* been there all along, they may indeed be hopeless.
