I don't know about how it all works, so where does the cost cutting come into play graphics wise? Is it less 3D modellers to work on the intricate designs? I mean if Nocon kids videos are what Shenmue 3 looks like, including his Ryo, I would be doing cartwheels. I'm certainly not expecting Arkham Knight graphics and stuff.

It probably means less detail used to create the character models, objects, environments etc. Also most likely less effort put in to the texturework and less effort put in t the lighting and other effects in screens.

Basically the artists won't be given as much time to work on stuff I guess.

Weren't the Shenmue original textures stupidly high res ?

Sadly the DC wasn't that much of a polygon pusher, so most of the models were very blocky for today's standards, but at least they have some stuff to work on.

Not really no. I think some of them in shenmue 2 were but the majority in both were 480x480 if I recall correctly.

They may have been high res for their time though.

Going by the article heading & some of the posts in here, I was dreading reading that interview but in all honesty there's absolutely nothing in there that's triggered red flags. Nothing has really changed from what we had been geared up to expect, i think. Yu sounds like he's in a good place now.

Well, unfortunately, Ben Kuchera was able to spin that quote into something really bad:

https://archive.is/fXVaD

The game's budget may be variable, but without knowing how much money the team has raised in total, it's hard to know how badly we've all failed Shenmue 3. Our shame, like the game's goals, is ephemeral and hard to describe in concrete terms.

"Kickstarter's finished, so we know what the minimum budget is," Suzuki continued. "We completed the game flow at the end of August, this month we're testing the game engine for Shenmue to see how it works. The team's a lot smaller than when we was working on Shenmue 2. But the process is just beginning — at this point we only need a small team. We said we'd get it out for Christmas 2017. Now I've got to work towards that, because that's what I said."

If that doesn't inspire confidence in the project, I'm not sure what to say. It's important to keep in mind that the story won't be finished with Shenmue 3; there will be much more that needs to be said after that game is released.

Shenmue 3 may be the best-funded game in history that ends with a "To Be Continued" message or, even better, a link to a second Kickstarter so we may continue to disappoint Suzuki with our mere millions of dollars.

Dude really has a hard-on for Shenmue.

Nice one with the archive link so that troll doesn't get ad revenue ;)

I was gonna post this but I really didn't want to give him the attention. He's a hack, plain and simple. No point in getting angry, it's exactly what he wants. Just ignore him.

Seriously, who actually believes this guy is sincere? Why are people still giving him views? How is Polygon still considered a reputable site? It's worse than student journalism.

Sigh.

Best thing is not to give them the time of day. These 'controversial' views are just click bait.

I don't see anything wrong with reading and discussing it. As Amir pointed out, the link will provide him with no ad revenue or views.

That said, there's not a lot to discuss. It's a fairly bogus editorial. 8)

It's a shame Ben Kuchera hasn't accomplished anything of note with his life with all his White Male Privilege™.

Oh well.
