It's a good thing YSnet said they won't be participating, because this quote from Playstation's Shawn Layden would have sent us crazy otherwise:

Layden says the Japanese publishers are also coming back, listing off recent games like Resident Evil 7, Nioh, Nier: Automata, Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV as examples. "That's super important for us," he says. "I think a lot of Japanese developers lost their way chasing the mobile games yen, if you will, but they're coming back to console in a major way. And speaking of, we'll have some big announcements at E3 in that precise vein."

Via Time Magazine.

I guess there's still room for Shenmue HD to be there, but eh. We'll see how things turn out.

Shenmue 3 wouldn't have been an announcement anyway. Unless it was confirmation of a release date, which I suppose I could see some people running with.

True. Should be a good show if you like Japanese games all the same.

Music to my ears. Love a good Japanese game showing. I'm happy that there's been a Japanese game resurgence the past year and a bit.

I would give some credit considering Blit Software on the task is a strong possibility. Two years appears very long though, would be rather a pretty small team if it's true.

I believe a developer on neogaf confirmed HD remasters are coming. It would not take 2 years tho. That's insane.

That would depend entirely on how many assets had to be recreated and how good the source code is. HD Remasters are harder than people think. Especially ones where they actually put effort into and want to get it right. I've heard real horror stories from people about certain HD projects. Some of these games are built on very old engines no longer compatible with current OS/hardware, a lot of technical wizardry had to be implemented to get these games working, it's not just a simple ROM dump with texture filtering and HD processors doing the rest. Some of the people who made these games are no longer available to contact, fallen off the face of the earth or not willing to help (which has happened). Nobody wants another Sonic Adventure botch job. This is Shenmue 1 and 2, these are big games which had massive teams working on them. If you look at the work of Square-Enix, they took various approaches - FFX HD was half remake, half remaster, Type 0 was a straight up remake with the guise of "HD Remaster", same goes for Kingdom Hearts HD releases and FFXII is actually a good example of a nice looking HD remaster, assets cleaned up. Then there's Capcom's remasters for RE1 and RE0 which had two different sources they used to recreate the games (0 assets were intact, whereas RE1's had to have new backgrounds created).
Makes you wonder how they will do it for Shenmue, depends on their budget but if the suggestion is that it's taken two years, might mean that whoever is doing it, wants it done right. Last thing we need is a Silent Hill HD Collection botch job, right?

Blitworks are not working on a Shenmue remaster.

Wind Waker HD is kind of a remake. Took 6 months. Tho that had the Nintendo Zelda team. TP HD however took about a year.

Something related to Sonic, I'd wager.

Shenmue's never getting top billing from Sega.
