Is Shenmue a Trilogy?

Postby Realillusion » Wed Jun 18, 2003 1:01 pm

If any of you know the rules to Trilogy's. I might be a little worried about Shenmue becoming one. It says that in the 3rd one, all bets are off. That means anything could happen, the whole thing could end by the main character dieing, anything! If the Shenmue series is a trilogy, Ryo can very well end up being killed by Lan Di or someone else in the 3rd Shenmue.

the same rules would apply if it were a duology, trilogy, quadrilogy, quintilogy, and whatever other "ilogys" you can think of. all writers figure "hey, its over anyway, might as well go crazy!"

Shenmue will *probably* end up being a trilogy, but there's no guarantee. It just depends on how many chapters of the story they put into the next game, and whether Yu/AM2 feel content with leaving it that way.

There were originally supposed to be 16 chapters. Shenmue I & II only cover chapters 1-4. I heard that there was supposed to be a satisfying end at around chapter 10, but who knows...

Shenmue might not be a trilogy.

You don't know that. Suzuki-san stated in an interview that if Shenmue III is to be made then the rest of the chapters(7-16) will all be squashed into a single game. Ishikawa-san's whiteboard diagram contained not only Shenmue IV, but also dots for possible further games even after that. So it all gets very confusing, Sega-AM2 is not giving any concrete info on the future of the series and still probably won't anytime soon. The most recent interview with Yu Suzuki, the one saying that he wasn't satisfied with leaving the series at Shenmue II was more like a personal statement/opinion rather than any kind of confirmation. So basically no one(except Sega) knows anything and no one has ever said that Shenmue was going to be a "trilogy", only that it is 16 chapters, thats it.

I think that if they figure how much fan support is out there they might end up splitting this game up into 4 games. I know that one of the represenitives said up to 6 games on that white board but that is definitley not going to happen. But 4 could happen. And Ryo hazuki could die, Lan di could die fuk san could run and get his head chopped off Shenhua will get naked and trun into yogi bear we dont know.. Yu Suzuki is un predictable in this title. We will be shocked in how this game ends I guarentee you that Yu Suzuki will leave us with our mouths wide open.

Shenmue I & II is not chapters 1-4. According to Shin Ishikawa's whiteboard diagram, Shenmue I & II covers chapters 1,3,4,5 and 6. Chapter 2, which took place on the boat was cut during the development of Shenmue II due to budget problems.

I definitely agree with you on this bit. The story of Shenmue is so epic and grand that it just couldn't conclude with a standard fairytale ending, or cliffhang with Shenmue II. The bit where you wrote about leaving us with our mouths open just couldn't have been better said. I hope the ending will be so vastly dynamic and completely unpredictable that I'll be totally blown over in my chair and have to tie my jaw to my face so that its not dropped down to my feet all the time. :D

For this I recommend a sock in the mouth, it keeps the jaw tight and the sock tastes very nice. I hope so too, because I really havnt been involved in video games this much before and its all because of Shenmue. It made me see video games in a different light and to see this one end is tough, because it is the game that really made me recognize video games as an art, and not just fun for hours kind of stuff. But if its going to end I hope I have to shoot myself cause it was so friggin sweet.

Shenmue chapters.

Shenmue I is the first chapter, albeit a big one at that.

The notebook in Shenmue II says its chapters 2-4. However, this is not true since it is now known that the chapter on the boat got cut and also from Ishikawa's diagram.

So the chapters are set out like this:

Shenmue I contained chapter 1.

Chapter 2 - the boat got cut.

Shenmue II contains chapter 3 - Lishao Tao(mostly took place in Wan Chai)
................................chapter 4 - Ren of Heavens(mostly took place in Aberdeen/BHW)
................................chapter 5 - Zhu Yuan Da and the Yellow Head
................................chapter 6 - The meeting of Destiny - Shenhua and the stone mirrors.

I always thought that it was weird where the notebook labelled all of Hong Kong as a single chapter while the other areas came on 1 disc each. So I think the Xiuying parts(up to the point where Zhang tells you of the Heavens and Xiuying locks you out)consists of one chapter and the encounters with Ren and BHW counts as another.

Chapter theories.

So did I, until I thought about what could have happened the boat and why does discs 1 & 2 contain two areas together while discs 3 & 4 have just one area each. The Ishikawa diagram confirmed my theories, but I didn't think they were actually going to include the boat as a chapter, so for a while I just thought Shenmue II was chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5. Now it be known that the boat chapter was cut, it pushes every figure back by one.

Hm, that means we should still have ten chapters forthcoming, which is fantastic but if what Yu Suzuki said in that interview was true - about all of them crammed into a single game, then Shenmue III will probably have even more cuts than Shenmue II. :(
Like the Kowloon area before the walled city(in bus cutscene), that was also cut from Shenmue II.
