Oh screw Sega... they aren't what they used to be

Lets try to get another developer interested in buying the rights to Shenmue... but judgeing off of games from companies I've played I'd say Namco Tales Studio or Tri-Ace are the only ones that could do the series justice!

I'd say the series selling is very likely instead of not likely thanks to the fact the sales were decreased by Sega's stupidity with the "multi-platform" approach that led each console to get a tiny bit of what Sega was... If Shenmue 1 and 2 were available for PS2 and GC as well as the Xbox I think we probably would have seen a 3 already. (This way they could have identified which platform the series was strong on and went from there...)

Hell if it goes to NTS they could call it Tales of Shenmue

I personally think Konami could be well suited. They have a few more cinematic series like Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill. So I think they could handle this well with Yu as a director and producer. Besides that, I've read that there are some people who worked on Shenmue in Kojima's team now.

Tecmo also have Project Zero on the other hand. While Capcom have Resident Evil.
I think many studio's could do well as long as Yu is directly involved. Even Nintendo maybe if he teamed up with Miyamoto ;)

Konami are the only ones I could see having optimism in the series...

Tecomo are too small. Capcom or Konami might be best. Also a western developer like Bioware or Ubisoft could do if they cooperated closely with Yu-san.
Dammit, even Nintendo could do it as long as Yu-San instructed them but I think Sega are not gonna sell it. They will just leave Shenmue alone, they will let it rot like a dead rat.

You say Sega wouldn't sell it but if enough of us bitched to Sega asking them to sell it to someone else then it might happen. Then again there's a 50,000 signed petition asking for Shenmue III and we've never got that.

no I'm saying maybe if said company offers up enough money... for a potential great seller... look at the next gen consoles.... there is nothing 3rd party of signifigance on any of them YET.... still time to repackage Shenmue and try to make some profits!!!

I acknowledge Tri-Ace and Namco Tales Studios (originally Wolfteam.. Tri-Ace was a part of the same team before they split and founded their own company)

because if you look at the Tales series and Star Ocean series there are things in common with the first releases of those games and Shenmue... they all (Tales, Star Ocean, Shenmue) pushed things never done before. Also the amount of optional content in their games is equivalent to that of Shenmue as is the way it is arranged (if you don't do certain things early on in the game certain scenes will not happen!)

Konami's MGS team would probably turn it into GTA in China...
while I do think it needs a darker theme and Lan Di needs to be displayed more as a bad guy than just some guy who got revenge on your dad that you are chasing down who is currently doing stuff you have no clue about since the story only displays Ryo's point of view (so far) Shenmue II changed it a little but it still only shows Ryo's POV and only those around him.

It'd be funny if someone were to make a knock-off Shenmue game.

Something "inspired" by Shenmue where everyone kinda winks and nudges at what's really going on.

Roy Hakuzi: "I need to find the man who killed my father."

Fluky-san: "No, Roy-san! They'll kill you for sure!"

Roy Hakuzi: "But he killed him and stole the Dragon statue!"

Fluky-san: "Where do you think he went?"

Roy Hakuzi: "He went to...that place... across the sea..."

Fluky-san: "Where?"

Roy Hakuzi: "You know... that place... over the sea!"

Fluky-san: "China?"

Roy Hakuzi: "Yes... but the part that the British rule..."

Fluky-san: "Oh... wait... why can't we just say 'Hong Kong'?"

Roy Hakuzi: "Then they'll KNOW we're ripping off Shenmue, dumb-ass!"

Fluky-san: "Oh."

Jenny-san: "Would you boys like some tea?"

Fluky-san: "Damn! Your granma's hot, Roy!"

Roy Hakuzi: "Actually... she is!... What the hell???"

For pure cinematic brilliance, my vote goes to Starbreeze.

For open-ended gameplay, my vote goes to Bioware or Bethesda Softworks.

For great storytelling, my vote goes to Konami.

I can't really pick just one developer because they all seem to specialize in certain aspects that, as a whole, make up what Shenmue is. But frankly, anybody could do a better job than Sega at this point. As long as Yu remains executive producer, I don't see the series straying too far from its roots under any developer's banner.

I've been saying Sega should sell the rights off for over a year now. It seems the situation has become just desperate enough so that such a suggestion no longer borders on heresy.

I'd go for Bioware. Jade empire turned out great, and Mass Effect is looking the same way.
