I don't think it's ever trended during the Tweetathon, although it has apparently happened when we weren't even trying. That's the murky science of Twitter. Trending relies heavily on what else is going on at any given moment. You can have far fewer tweets on a subject one day than the previous, and stand a higher chance of trending because of what it's up against.
At the moment though I still see trending as a long term goal rather than something I expect to see with each new month. The most important thing is raising awareness of the event and drawing in more participants through other channels. Trending will then take care of itself, and create a tipping point where even more people get involved because they saw it trending.
