The article says the trademark is being cancelled due to inactivity. Does that racing game count for nothing? Also the patent office page it links to claims the copyright was cancelled in 2009, five years ago, so this isn't exactly breaking news.

Not a big deal. The original trademark has been dead since 2009. This second trademark likely relates to the now cancelled Shenmue Online.

I wouldn't be surprised to see an upstart dev slap the Shenmue name on one of their games and register the trademark in the US. The publicity couldn't hurt. A Sega lawsuit might though.

No thanks bro...unless you want the game to come out to be a total disappointment. Just because its Shenmue doesn`t mean its going to be a great game, all depends on the creators. Though I think at this point some people are just happy enough to know how the story ends regardless of how good the game is.

Firstly; given that there are two trademarks - I'm inclined to agree with Ziming that the TM that just expired probably related to Shenmue Online (notice the trademark is for 'providing an online game'). If that is the case - the trademark for the traditional Shenmue series lapsed five years ago.

It's also possible that the second trademark was related to HD re-releases of the original games through XBL and PSN - but the fact that it's lapsed suggests that Sega were unable to show any intention of using the trademark in the future (ie, releasing HD ports) - as per section 8 of the trademark act.

There's no way this could be good news - but as it is - I don't think it's bad news.
