To Be Honest, the Game Happening Is Amazing, But...

Does anyone else find it equally refreshing to just have this game be acknowledged? As in, for the first time in over a decade, this is an open discussion. The air of mystery that has plagued our community is finally gone. We aren't wondering what Yu is thinking anymore. He's telling us. We aren't forced to ask questions that we fear will never be answered. We will never again need to hear a certain, unnamed game publisher not "comment on rumors or speculation" or announce that there are "no plans at this time" ever again. Ever.

In some ways, the announcement has almost taken away a key element of what has made this community special for the past 14 years. Even for us lurkers who have kept up-to-date and silently supported this franchise that we all hold dear. In other ways, it's showed the strength of what a fan-base can really do.

We won't be looked at as the crazies who put faith in an unreachable dream anymore, but the crazies who never stopped believing, and showed that dedication and faith can be rewarded.

While I believe that the very fabric of this community has changed forever, now that our biggest wish is a reality, I just want to say that I'm proud to have been a part of this great group with all of you for all of these years. As a 12-year-old back in 2000, I never thought the journey would last this long, or mean this much.

Thanks for never giving up!

There's going to be a big change here and yes, a part of my is a bit scared about all the news talk and so on coming up. But that's a normal situation if someone is stuck in limbo for so long and suddenly has to face a "new world". It's like waking up from a 14 year long coma.

I find it more irritating to think what will happen when Shenmue III is out and the saga is done. Once all the talk about the game has been done what will be left to do then? Wait for spinoffs or a new story? That is a much worse situation that what we're getting in right now.

Like all things in life, all good things will eventually come to an end - no matter how bittersweet that reality may be. Given that, chin up, guys. We've been waiting for this for nearly all our lives.

And just as it is on the flip side of that coin of life, let's make the build up to and final complete realisation of Shenmue 3 one of the greatest times of our lives.

We'll cry not because Shenmue is finally over, but because it was real, did happen, and we were able to share in its significance directly.

Years from now, or even the very next morning, we can all tell our friends and family - no matter what circumstances we or they are caught in at the moment - that absolutely *nothing* is impossible, because, we, Shenmue, Mr. Suzuki, and the tough but stubborn little community we share here are legitimate proof that nothing is impossible - so long as you never give up and always give it your all to fulfill those greatest dreams and wishes of yours.

Let's not let our efforts go to waste! Life is full of so many possibilities...and we've only just made one come true today. Thanks.

I do remember Yu talking about Shenmue IV a couple of times more recently. So who knows? Maybe it could depend on the funding.

From one interview :
Yu Suzuki : Yes indeed, the story is far away from being completed and to be honest, I do not think that it's possible to end it during Shenmue III. If I had to do it my way, players would experience the ending during Shenmue V. But that seems to be a lot so I'm going to try to finish it within the next 2 games.

Yeah, I don't want the story truncated down. That would just lessen the quality of the third game, IMO. Hopefully this Kickstarter raises enough money that it makes it realistic to expand the series into at least 4 games.

Who honestly thought this could happen? I would imagine next to nobody. Shenmue did become an industry joke, like Duke Nukem Forever, stuck in rumour hell.

I'm glad that the game is going down the Kickstarter route, as it'll (hopefully) prove that it's viable. One of the main worries I'd imagine Yu Suzuki had about making Shenmue 3 was whether it'd actually make money. Now, if it gets funded, there will be a fair bit of proof.

Shenmue 3, 4 and 5 - I could live with that. Heck, I could probably live with Shenmue 3 alone, but we don't know the story and how it would pan out. My only concern is that they really should use this as an opportunity to re-release Shenmue 1 + 2, but I think Microsoft would have something to say about that, having helped out during Shenmue 2's development.

Hopefully a stretch goal will be Shenmue IV? I know they've got extra areas planned but depending on how successful this is I hope to see more game-related stretch goals. Maybe if Shenmue III is a success Sony will back Shenmue IV? A man can dream, especially now that Shenmue III is confirmed :)

Shenmue III will probably do good business since it's one of those things that has been proven via community and now this Kickstarter that the demand has been building up for some time now and finally exploded.

Any further sequels (except for maybe one more) is ENTIRELY dependent on the critical assessment. I bet some people will be pissed off that it'll end in yet another cliffhanger.
