You're not alone! 1986 for me! ...I believe that's the year in which Shenmue is set.

I was 11 when it first came out, so since then:

-Graduated high school and college with a computer technology degree
-Worked at a law office for 4 years, then started my current job, where I've recently been promoted to a team leader
-Came out as gay
-Been in a very serious relationship for 4 years, engaged for 2 of them (hoping to get married as soon as it becomes legal in Ohio).
-My other favorite franchise, Metal Gear, had more than 8 (!) games released
-My favorite band, Dream Theater, released 7 albums

It is bizarre how many 28-year-olds are here as I am also 28. I guess the game just resonates with our generation. I remember Shenmue as I had a Dreamcast back in 1999/2000 but I never owned or played the game. It wasn't until I started tracking down the old game systems that I had in 2012 that I picked up a Dreamcast and gave Shenmue a chance. It instantly became my favorite video game and I've been dying for a third installment ever since.

Great thread! I was a lurker here for some time but didn't register until 2005. Can't say I've been very active during the last 6-7 years though. I'm actually amazed I could remember my password.

Anyway, very interesting to read how much has happened in people's lives during these 14 years. Sadly I can't really say the same thing about myself. At least not many interesting things.

Still live in the same apartment, still no driver's licence (not that I've actually tried to get one, but still...), got a little fat, lost a lot of hair, lost my two remaining grandparents, almost lost my old friend (the same guy who got me interested in Shenmue back in 99/00) but decided to contact him again after the S3-reveal. We're ok now - thanks to Shenmue. How weird is that...

The band split up for good back in 2002 and I haven't really been playing much since then, apart from practicing at home and playing Highway to Hell and Summer of '69-type stuff at work-related events.

Got outsourced in '09 (a great company I'd been with for 10+ years), had a couple of so-so years with the new employer until they decided to relocate most of the business to a very distant part of the country. Was offered to follow, but that would have been impossible. I had to quit. Was unemployed for a year until I found a new job. Not very pleasant at all. Somewhat shady company that didn't pay their employees very much and treated many of us like crap. Worked there for a year but didn't get my contract renewed back in February. Been looking for work since then.

No kids of my own but my sister has two cool little girls now. First one born in '06. Man, that was quite a chock for me.
Dreamcast - up to six billion players.

My life is nowhere near where it was other than a similar location back on Long Island. 14 years ago I was in my senior year of high school getting ready to leave for Vermont to college. A much different place kind of an analogy to Japan and Guilin. Worked part time in fast food. Like Ryo I had a girl who was trying to bond with me but I pushed her away because I knew I wasn't long for this place, and she was a couple grades below me. One of my biggest life regrets today.

Fast forward 14 years later I own my own place, VP of a brokerage firm, president of a volunteer organization. Haven't found the right one yet (hence my regret mentioned earlier) I feel like Jerry Seinfeld in woman come and go in my life. There are very little similarities really. 18 years old was alot different than 31.

I think it was around 2004/2005 when I played Shenmue for the first time. I'm one of those who played Shenmue2 first because I owned an Xbox back then. I remember I was amazed by the Shenmue2 demo that I found on a magazine.. :D So then I bought Shenmue2 and a Dreamcast on ebay to play the first one. I was at high school at the time. Now I've got a degree in Japanese language and culture and I'm doing a master's degree, and I hope to find a good job soon, either here in Italy or in Japan. :) I'm 25 now and I'm still a gamer as I was in my childhood.. During this time I''ve also been playin a lot of instruments and gigs in small venues and music remains one of my biggest passions. The 3 months I've spent in Japan (mainly Kyoto) last year were awesome as well. I'll be back in Japan next month but just for a couple of weeks, as a tourist this time.. 8)

To people that are in Japan, you guys wanna go for a drink some time? It's so rare to meet people who know Shenmue.

At a school I used to work at years ago, the lunch lady also liked Shenmue. Unfortunately, I didn't find out until a few weeks before she left for another school. I mean, it's not really something you mention to regular people since nobody knows about it.

Anyway, if anyone is in Japan, we could go drink in Dobuita even! Haven't been there since 2007.
I'm not much of a planner/organizer, but it's not like it takes much planning to just show up at the station and have a look around.
Mr.Burns: "Smithers, I think I'll donate a million dollars to the Shenmue 3 kickstarter!..."
Smithers: *stares at Mr.Burns incredulously*
Mr.Burns:...when pigs fly!!!
*they both burst into laughter*
*pig flies past the window*
Smithers: ...will you... be donating a million dollars now, sir?
Mr.Burns;...No, I'd still prefer not to.

Auguri, signore.

As for me, first played 'mue in January, 2006, as I got my DC in October, '05.

I was so cheesed that the game ended with Chai as I didn't know the backstory behind Shenmue (which is VERY unlike me; I research things to death before getting into them). Then got 'mue II in 2008 (a story I like to tell a lot) and have never looked back!

In the past 14 years (I was 12 when it 'mue II came out), a ton has happened. High School was great and despite graduating a semester before everyone (Summer school FTW!), I stayed an extra full year because a lot of my grade 12 marks were shitty.

Went to University and got kicked out of one of my majors (Communications, the reason I went to Uni in the first place) and got a job at the supermarket by my house. Loved both Uni and my job and after 2 years, got back into Comm and graduated a year later, like high school, I left a year after my peers, with more credits than necessary to graduate lol. Uni was awesome, but I had a lot of hardship to go with the highs; I got cancer, a chick I was seriously pursuing chose another guy over me when I was in hospital during that time (which is fine by me now, but at the time I took it super hard), travelled to Italy which was lovely but then got treated like crap at my job when I got back, for about 6-7 months and my sister got divorced (after we dealt with the loser for almost 11 years), which was hard on the family.

Did a post-grad certificate for Social Media and just finished that, plus I quit the supermarket job after 7 years, 6 months (I DID have future prospects there, but things went sour the last 2 months I was there), as I was approached for my current job right now, at the HO of a bank.

Met my future wife in 2009, at said job and started dating her in 2012. I'm going to propose to her next year, when we go to Japan (in July). Life has been interesting and a MASSIVE learning experience, these past 14 years!

It's depressing reading all these success stories, lol. I was 14 in '99 when I first played Shenmue. 16 or 17 when I played the sequel on the Xbox. I am now 29, and will be hitting dirty thirty in less than a month. There's been a whole book of events and changes. I never finished college, though, and have been toiling away at crappy, dead-end jobs pretty much ever since I graduated high school. I met the love of my life in '08, and got dumped by the love of my life in '10. Had a few meaningless flings since then, but I'm thoroughly damaged goods. A has-been that never was. I rent a decent apartment I can barely afford. I sleep way too much. Yeah... life was a lot better when I was 14 - 17. I've been watching a lot of porn and contemplating suicide lately. But hey, Shenmue 3's coming out, so I got that going for me!
