There will be part time jobs that will be indicative of those you would find in China. In the Stretch goals there will also be the old favorites.

My apologies. It's easy to get off topic with so many questions being answered :)

Q: What will Ryo do to earn money in Shenmue 3?

As great and engrossing as the story and gameplay were in Shenmue 1 and 2, I (and many others) really really liked the forklift driving. It was like I could learn a new (video game) skill, get good at it, and putter around the docks like a badass.

Q: Do you have any more details to share about the stretch goals? It's not clear to me what a "Rapport System" or "Character Perspective System" entails.

A: They are new systems, so naturally they need new names. The Rapport System will govern changes in Shenhua's actions depending on your conversations with or actions towards her. The "Character Perspective System" will highlight different characters personalities as they go through the story.

Okay; Suzuki did explain the Rapport system in some of his interviews, it just wasn't given that official name. At least now we know what it is, and it does sound like a pretty good game mechanic that adds some variability into the story.

The Character Perspective System still isn't really clear to me though.

Yeah it didn't bother me either. It's not like they had anything interesting to say anyway.

I would never imagine myself playing Shenmue 3 and have interactions with mute npcs. So you want a downgraded version of the game?

Did you fall on your head as a child? I never said that's what I wanted I said that very well might be what we have to deal with considering that the budget for this game probably won't be as considerable compared to the first 2 games. No one gives a damn about if you can imagine yourself playing shenmue with mute NPCs. If they don't have the money to voice them all then they don't have the money.
Why are you comparing the budget to the first two games? You realize they don't have to make the Shenmue graphics engine (does that have a name???) this time right? They don't have to start from scratch. Different times my friend.

Because the fact that they are using Unreal is proof enough that they are saving costs while in the first 2 games they had near unlimited funding from SEGA which allowed them to polish them as much as they needed. They didn't have to create the engine for the second game either yet it still cost in excess of 20 million to make.
How is that proof? The reason they built the engine in the first place is because no 3D engine was in place to create the immersion they wanted. Now, with modern game advancements, obviously many games and engines have this ability. Many AAA games (not saying Shenmue will be AAA), use Unreal on smaller budgets than the original Shenmue.

There is absolutely no reason for them build their own engine when they have Unreal right in front of them. Yu has already stated that Unreal allows him to get close to the look he wants for Shenmue.

Because unreal isn't designed specifically for this type of game and creating their own engine would allow them to create a much more polished product in the end. I can link you to multiple game design forums where people discuss it if you don't believe me.

Anyway if that's not proof enough then what about the reports saying that kickstarter will represent the bulk of the funding? Games now cost more to make than they did 15 years ago yet assuming that report is true they're making shenmue 3 with a much smaller budget than 2 that if we take in to consideration inflation cost around 30 million dollars in today's money despite not needing to build an engine for it either.

I think the Character Perspective System will have different characters changing their view of you depending on your actions in the game.

I understand. I'm sorry; I have limited knowledge of game design, but thank you for your helpful insight.

But then again Yu Suzuki and his team are very talented people so they may be able to pull it off. All I'm saying is that we shouldn't expect things that featured in the first 2 games to be in shenmue 3 for sure as there will most likely be budget constraints.

For a matter of fact I did. So now is this the time I should be expecting you to start calling me names? I just answered your comment towards my post which you CARED enough to reply, so I don't understand your hostility.

Then again, I expect this Shenmue to be more in smaller environments based on the villages announced in the game. Perhaps that will allow for a smaller budget? Different, but intimate.

Q: Love your work! You are a pioneer in this industry! As for my question: How much game elements/features will we be missing in the game if the campaign doesn't reach the $5 million mark?

A: I will say this: if we reach the $5 mil mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality.

At $10 million, it will truly have the features of an open world.

You make a good point there. I guess it's a bit early to really know considering we still have very little information.
