That is a VERY interesting article indeed! Gears of War cost $10 million and that was an amazing game, both from the point of view of: graphics, gameplay, story, cut-scenes, voice acting.

To me, that article is quite reassuring that great games can be made with a relatively modest budget!

...And not the $30-50 million that some people have been saying!


There is alot of great games done with not much money but look at the last few years...They are in the 30+ million range.


I wonder if thats because of marketing....I also wonder how accurate those numbers are, maybe before 2010, they didn't include marketing cost when asked how much it cost. Who knows.

But I agree, $5 million budget is starting to look better with those comparisons but still not good enough for shenmue IMO

But you are not getting into account that A LOT of a new IP is the pre production.

Shenmue got 14 years free, and even got some assets.

However the budget works out I am sure that Yu will deliver an experience that he will be proud to put his trademark on.
