Yes YS Net, Nelio, Shibuya Productions.. we dont know what they are capable of yet.
I don't think we'll have a AAA game by current standards.
I do think we'll have a good game though.
The only thing I have to go on is my faith in Suzuki and the key Shenmue vets in the dev team.

I really can't agree with that. I can't think of a western game made in the last 5 years that's 10% as good as Bayonetta or Dark Souls or Monster Hunter.

good example, the scale and graphical fidelity of that game is very impressive for an indie studio.

I think the only bad thing Shenmue had was the voice acting. Everything else was pretty much flawless in terms of game development.

The japanese VA was godlike though.

I think I'll mention that there are various aspects to a AAA game of course such as sound design and gameplay mechanics. We can see in the stretch goals that Yu has a lot of ideas for an improved battle system, I wish so badly that those stretch goals can be achieved.

This is actually what I'm worried about. I know before the Shenmue 3 announcement we all said "I don't care what it is long as Shenmue 3 is made" but we live in a world where it's being made, so now we're less desperate and want to say what it should and shouldn't be. But I can't think of a Shenmue game that isn't an open world. Shenmue was the first truly open world game I'd ever experienced. That was what drew me to the game. I saw a DVD showing how much freedom the player would have and I was hooked. So to think of a more linear Shenmue doesn't seem like Shenmue to me. I'm not expecting GTA V or Just Cause 2 but I'd like an open world similar in scope to Shenmue 1 and 2.

Well, sorry, but Batman is wrong (since Dark Souls wipes the floor with 99% of games from last gen). It's okay Batman, you've got work to do anyway.

Yeah, I agree, the open world is very important IMHO. I don't care if the graphics aren't as good as modern AAA games, but it must have an open world like the first two games or it just won't be Shenmue.

The Last of Us wipes the floor with Dark Souls...

I do love the game I just know Henry loves it more. ;-)

ConanTheKing wrote: Hi all, I made this thread because I feel we need to check our expectations. When the kickstarter was announced a lot of people asked "How can Shenmue III be made for as little as $2-$10 million?" Many then went on to assume that surely Sony is funding this as Shenmue 1 was like $50 million and there was the creation of the current rumour which plagues the kickstarter for Shenmue III.

We got some clarification, Sony is not funding development of the game but other stuff like marketing, regardless, as Adam Boyes said "It's very much their game" which leads me to wonder, why do we assume Shenmue III will have these AAA standards?

Could it be that maybe the game won't have the latest cutting edge graphics despite Unreal Engine IV. Maybe the gameplay will feel classic also, the combat system in Shenmue is not as fluid and fast paced as the one in Yakuza 0 (A modern game) but once again, with the budget given to us maybe it won't feel super modern with lots of fancy state of the art motion capture which has come a long way since the first Shenmue did motion capture.

Now why is this important? Because I feel some people are going to have unrealistic expectations, they think Sony is funding this and are expecting an impressively looking open world game with tons of interactivity and it probably will be when it releases but not on the scale that everyone imagines and so everyone will get grumpy, rage on the forums, saying the game looks crap and boring yet not realising that all along this was an indie game.

I certainly won't have those unrealistic expectation, I just want closure.

I loved both Shenmue I and II, and I wouldn't mind playing Shenmue III with Dreamcast like graphics and mechanics. Those who say otherwise are not really Shenmue fans.

Yu should focus on having a solid history, and he should not waste time trying to add new mechanics and so on, because that's what normally kills a franchise.

It's obvious Shenmue III IS NOT going to have the same production values Shenmue I and II had (it won't even reach 5M USD), but that's not the point.

I'm expecting about mid-market level or a budget. Middle market would be fine for Shenmue 3 I think; not too expensive but not super low on budget. Just high enough for what would usually be a new IP from a lesser known developer.

Telltale games are considered indie, Dynasty Warriors is considered AAA (although past gens this would have been arguable). Certainly Hyrule Warriors and Dragon Quest Heroes are and they've based off Dynasty Warriors.

I think now a days there's no more inbetween. That's what many industry insiders are complaining about. You have your indie titles made with small teams on a tight budget and the rest AAA development which splurges on every aspect of the game. Shenmue III is looking to use over 10 million in development alone (even if Kickstarter only brings 5, he has other funding sources providing too. So unless they have no clue what they're doing this is clearly going to be side by side with other AAA titles rather than indie games.

Just knowing that we're getting Shenmue 3 is good enough for me. This time last month I would've taken a novel to finish the story, I just want to know how the story develops. The icing on the cake would be if it's AAA standard of course but I'm happy just knowing that the story continues :-)
