I am a bit confused why the Ryo model looks so bad

Postby Jackie Fhan » Tue Jun 30, 2015 10:38 pm

If they have scans of the sculpts they made, why aren't they using these scans or re scanning the sculpts to make the model and edit it to fit the game world better?

Just seems the whole design of the head is wrong in so many ways. What is going on here?

At least with the power of the hardware an the art style

I honestly think the characters could be near this 1 to 1. Hope they eventually will

I'd rather even have this exact model with higher rez textures than the current job

Hey guys,
I am currently looking for an artist for an upcoming project. it's a decently long product with a lot of art assets. I am looking for a bit of a unique style. You will of course be paid and I am hoping the style can be similar to anime or american comics such as Greg Capullo or Jim Lee.

It would help if you are good in gothic, blood, facial expressions and action posses as well as the idea of having some joke items thrown in as well

Please contact me at - [email protected] if interested.

More to the point, why don't they ask SUMO their all star model Ryo was pretty good.

Not awesome as shenmue online, but really good.

This is the current updated model.
And Suzuki has already said he's not happy with this one either.
Seemingly they are trying for a slightly new look while keeping it familiar.
But still, Suzuki is far from done in accepting the current pre-pre-alpha work.
We have 2 more years of revisions to look at. Hold on to your butt.

Old interview few years after Shenmue II :

What things do you still remember ?
Tetsunari Iwasaki (main 3D character designer): A lot of things ! Especially the creation of Lan Di which was tough, the producer never agreed. The Lan Di's hard stare in his eyes shows how it was so difficult !

Don't worry, in Yu we trust.

He is right though. And it'd be cost effective to just re-use the high poly versions in the SEGA archives. After all, he did say that he has access to the original assets.

Because game development hasn't started yet and it was a concept video?

Kinda missing the point here.
Since development hasn't started, why not re-use the passport model but with higher resolution skin textures and whatnot? Why go through the trouble of creating a brand new model that is clearly inferior?
"Development hasn't started" doesn't really have anything to do with what we're talking about here.

You guys assume they can access 1999 tech and make it workable in 2015, why exactly?

Don't be naive and assume they'll be able to use everything from the old games. A better question is why they didn't use Sumo's model, but Sumo's model is not from the old games, it's from Sonic Racing.

I don't know, why not? Is it really hard to import a 3D model into whatever it is they're using nowadays, and re-draw the textures on it? I'm by no means a pro in 3D modeling, but I did some of it in college back in 2006, and it's not that hard as far as I can tell. For professional game designers, it should be a piece of cake.

You bring up a good point with the racing model though- even that one looks so much better than what we got in the Shenmue 3 preview. I'm sorry, but no matter how you look at this, there's just no excuse for a Ryo with a face like that.

Obviously, this new character gave Ryo an ass whoopin' before stealing his jacket.
(Guilin's gotten rough over the years. )

In the meantime, Shenhua, being the "innocent" girl that she is, has yet to notice anything...

Lol, imagine if the game came out, and that was the actual plot :D

They probably can't use the passport, racing, etc. models, because of tech or legal reasons or whatever reason. They also might not even have the old sources, depends how good they're with archiving stuff. Also, sometimes it's just better to start from scratch. It's also a new engine and sometimes assets done for other engines are just going to eventually turn problematic, too problematic.

Getting inside their dev process is not only hard for us, it's a practical impossibility.

I don't think they even started making the game.

So at E3 we saw lots of games, let's take Fallout 4 for example, that game is in progress so there are already characters, settings and gameplay features to show.

Shenmue III however is only being created with Kickstarter funds and because the Kickstarter had yet to begin they have no funds to currently make a game, so what they showed us wasn't the final gameplay footage of Ryo but just a place holder.

the shenhua model has grown on me A LOT, and i now think i it prefer it over the originals. but the ryo Model even the amended one are not right at all.

i still maintain that the famitsu article model is different from the one in the kickstarter trailer, why aren't they using that?

i love the dojo twitter banner:

Even this Ryo can be improved but its much better than any of the others.
