Random Shenmue III Thoughts

Pretty awesome 3D model of Ryo. Not quite 100% perfect, but I seriously hope they can approach this level of detail in Ryo's Shenmue III model.

Level of detail is great. But the face is so far off-model that it it looks like a half-baked True Crime Streets of LA reject.

I'm confident no model in Shenmue III will be like that, which is a good thing, because it may be symptomatic of their correct, as far as I'm concerned, priorities in designing a game. Detail in Shenmue has always been about storytelling. We can skip visual detail if that harms writing and in-game diverseness in anyway, which often seems the case.

I think it's possible to achieve that detail for main characters, much like how Ryo and the core cast looked better than the average NPC in the original games. They're using a similar system in Shenmue III, with Ryo and Shenhua being, in Yu's words, "A-class characters". That level of detail in all characters would be insane and impractical, but for the two character models you'll be seeing for the majority of the game? Sure, they could easily spend the extra time making them look good and not drastically impact the game elsewhere.

I think if the model had a stronger jaw and nose, slightly more defined eyebrows, and a slightly wider/higher head, it'd look pretty on-model for Ryo. Hands, jacket, jeans, shirt, etc all look amazing and on-point though.

Yeah. It's not Ryo's model. It's a random dude equipped with Ryo's cloths. Maybe from a modelpack, maybe the artist's own model, but the face was not created to be Ryo, that's for sure. It looks fimilar to another model from the same artist. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/oZvnO
The detail level is ok for Triple-A-game standarts.

Of course nothing will ever be like Shenmue. But it's always good to get into a game series and feel a love for it that you can relate to your love you had for Shenmue. Thankfully last year, I did fall in love with the Witcher, and over the past year, I've immersed myself in the world, and love how such a huge game it is. When I say I've done everything, I've done everything. Every side mission, including the collect em all gwent cards, and playing the game a second time around on Death March setting. It's rare for me to get so much into a game these days, putting in over 200+ hours into it!

Anyways, tonight I got some serious Shenmue feels. Not from anything in the game, but at Midnight, the final and HUGE expansion pack became available to play at 00:01 and when the game launched, I thought about Shenmue 3 immediately, knowing that the excitement I am feeling right now will be magnified to unknown proportions. Just into the Witcher now, and looking at the completely new section of the World Map and completely fucking giddy. I wish I was off work tomorrow to explore this vast map and discover everything in it! I can't imagine what it will be like to do that once the main menu screen of Shenmue 3 pops up. How tired I will be because I haven't slept. Waiting in agony all day for the pre-downloaded game to be made available to play at midnight. I will of course buy physical copies of the game, but I will have it downloaded and instantly ready to go at midnight. Even the excitement in will feel when that day becomes available to pre download will be insane. How will the fan base be reacting? How will the media react? It's going to be a time I never thought we would experience, and it's coming fast!

On that note, here's a suggestion for those in the community who are more than capable of proving their 1337 haxxor skillz by exploring the pre-downloaded data or fenced off parts of the trial version:

Don't.

Not just for other people's sake but for your own. Don't rob yourself of the organic feeling that Peter's just described above. The temptation to be 1ST!!!!!1 to peek under the hood will be strong, but in the long run you will have fonder memories of resisting and discovering the game the way it was meant to be discovered.

I'd go one better and openly admit I don't want there to be a trial release. Or pre beta or any of that stuff. After all these years, I want all of us to be on an even playing field. Also, why do I want to play an unfinished game that I've waited so long for. Updates and peeks into the game development are spoiler enough, but once that trial drops, i am gone.

Also, why do I want to play an unfinished game that I've waited so long for. Updates and peeks into the game development are spoiler enough, but once that trial drops, i am gone.

I can understand wanting to play the game fresh, and ideally I'd like to do the same, but I feel a duty to play the trial version so I can help identify any bugs or general issues before the game's release that would negatively affect its reception. We know the original Shenmue had to months and months of testing from innumerable testers, and with Shenmue III's lowered budget some of that responsibility has been passed on to us.

I'm also going to avoid the beta and all information that might get leaked to me along with it upon its release, but I don't think a beta is a bad thing to offer to those who would like it. Kind of like a What's Shenmue 3? There are going to be new people to the series that will be given access to the beta and it might be a good thing for them to try out first before jumping right in, totally up to them.
