Shenmue 3 backers by location

London is number one followed by Tokyo..

For Coutries:

USA leads by a massive margin, then UK as expected. While Japan is fourth, is anyone else disappointed at such low numbers for Japan compared to USA?

I would say shenmue is more unique to uk and us fans because the japanese and chinese culture is so different to us that it fascinates us! So while the japanese are likely to still buy the game potentially not as interested in backing as not as desperate to see the game as us for the above reasons

The Dreamcast and the original Xbox were more popular in the west than in Japan. If Shenmue had been released on the Saturn that list would be totally different!

I think it has something to do with the Japanese fans being unable to use/not understanding Kickstarter. That was one of Yu's primary concerns from the campaign if I remember rightly. He spoke about it on... Nico Nico was it? Maybe some Famitsu stream?

Further info reveals about half of the backers were backer virgins, their first time backing anything on KS.

Possibly, but as far as I'm aware Shenmue sold fairly well in Japan as well as the west.

This old data illustrates this with roughly equal numbers for Japan and USA, however the backer proportions are between Japan and USA for Shenmue 3 is a huge contrast.

Why so? It was one of the main markets where Shenmue was released, probably 7th or 8th in the world at the time. I only find surprising to have more Canadian backers, and only half of italian ones, despite having more population.

Intersting to see Canada come up before countries with a way larger population such as Italy or Germany. The laguage barrier probably does still play a big role in non english-speaking countries. Since Shenmue never had Italian or German subtitles it has probably never built a fanbase as big as in English speaking countries in Italy and Germany. Also, some people might have felt uncomfortable using an English only KS page.

Honestly surprised to see UK so far up the list considering how small we are in comparison to other countries out there.
I think 4th for Japan is also good, again, small country (densely populated, sure but still, considering they weren't really catered to for this fundraising, it was good).

We probably never would have seen it on the Saturn in the West though, if at all. Sega of America pretty much totally gave up on it in '97.
