Very interesting read, thank you!

Suzuki tells Polygon he’s been thinking about how to make Shenmue 3 for 10 years. "Shenmue 3 was always with me," he says. Returning to Ryo and the Shenmue universe hasn’t been difficult, he says, because he hasn’t left.

Did they repeat to his face the allegations they were making last Summer?

If you don't want to give to the disgusting Polygon the clicks / ad revenue, click this http://archive.is/Fv95h instead.

I'm stunned they didn't go with the headline:

Yu Suzuki on Shenmue 3: "To be honest, don’t expect too much"

I'm sure that if the focal point of the article was Shenmue 3 (and they didn't interview other developers), that would be the headline (or something more dramatic).

“To be honest, don’t expect too much"

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

It simply means keep your expectations realistic. Don't expect Uncharted 5 graphics in a world the size of GTA 6 with as many missions as Fallout 5. That would be expecting too much. This is an indie game with a modest budget - made by a very talented and experienced team, but those are the parameters. Set your expectations accordingly and all will be well.

It means:
"[...] don’t give me too much pressure. That would be better, as I can make a better game, because I can be more creative."

It needs to be read into context (otherwise, it will lead to misunderstandings, that's butter and bread for clickbait). Therefore, based on the context (and in other words) it says:

Don't expect Shenmue 3 to be as big as e.g. GTAV, or to be the next groundbreaking game in terms of scale and technology, something that goes beyond what we have seen so far. Don't put that pressure on him. The budget is limited and he has rather prefer to put his "creative heart" into things that would make S3 an amazing intimate/inward experience, without the goal being to revolutionize once again. Sure, it will bring many innovations in storytelling aspects and new elements compared to the previous installments, but he doesn't promise (and we shouldn't expect) the moon.

A good point of reference/cross-check is this interview: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50042

come on guys now that there's an actual article I think it's ok to give them the clicks (I'm all for it when it's just clickbait though).

Maybe they'll start to see that trying to sell outrage is not a very open endgame (sadly I think it is).

This is actually a good bit of context to what Yu says in the Polygon article, and I'm totally gonna steal it for the GAF thread.

Excellent read, a shame Suzukis name is next to that crook Tim Schafer.

Tim Schafer, a "crook"? Why, because he expanded Broken Age into two parts and gave the second part for free to its backers? If only there were more such "crooks."

Exactly, would anyone rather have a complete but shorter, budget game by release that does poorly? Broken sword 5 did the same thing and that was excellent. Honestly, we shouldn't be too surprised if even Shenmue 3 takes this approach.
