There is one thing that sticks out to me so much when I look at the footage that we have seen so far and was just wondering if you guys noticed it as well :P

In like every video game ever (until the Witcher 3 - wow what a game that was) trees, grass and other foliage are just static. They don't move, change shape or sway and if they do, its a very subtle, unrealistic movement. Shenmue 3 has, even in its super basic prototype form, absolutely nailed this. I know its a very small detail, but that is what gets me so excited. Yu is a master of adding realism to the word very naturally with the small things, and it just points out to me that he still has it and just adds to my overall hype of the game...

LOOK AT THESE TREES! lol

Thanks.

I think The Vanishing of Ethan Carter was pretty good too.

Ahh yeh, you're right. It's crazy to me though that a very select few games do it. Big "triple A" games tend to forget or just do not care lol. It was the first thing I noticed when the Witcher 3 footage appeared, and it looked so strange to me because I'd never seen tree movement before in a game. I love the attention to detail and hope we will see many more things going forward that Yu puts into the game that other developers overlook.

It's great to know that Yu's happy with the way the game is turning out.
Also, those environments really excite every time I see them. To think that we'll soon be running around them as Ryo Hazuki and continuing the story of Shenmue in a world that looks like that blows me away.

I'm excited!

Yeah, it's going to be quite a rush going from Dreamcast-era graphics to something powered by UE4. The landscapes really do look amazing and Shenmue 3 isn't even finished yet! I can't wait to see how everything looks in the final version of the game.

Of course, I still think that the graphics in Shenmue 1 and 2 hold up really well. Especially the facial animations on the main characters, everyone looks so life-like even with the limitations of the hardware in mind. Shenmue is easily one of the best technical showcases for what the Dreamcast was really capable of as a console.

I expected more info for the first anniversary, I hoped we'd have another live stream or maybe another Q&A with Suzuki.
We learned that development started only six month ago, and I hope they finally kicked AJ out of the mix for good ...

The development really started 6 month ago but that doesn't mean that anything hasn't been made before.
They had plenty of preparation work, hiring and design to do.

Also, don't forget the Chinese event (back in November 2015) where some footage and prototype were already shown to the public:

I'm satisfied with the Anniversary update, glad to see how happy and confident Yu Suzuki looks!

I'm sure they are holding material for bigger events like TGS or PSX.

Just keep in mind that from the end of they year, Shenmue 3 will be far enough in development to show new material. Exciting times are coming for both fans and backers!

I would personally eliminate TGS from any expectations knowing the prototype is a lot younger than we expected it to be. It's not totally out of the question, but it might be best to pin our expectations more on PSX for any kind of re-unveiling on a conference stage.

Still, playable slice in just six months is great progress. Even if they had been testing from August-December, they've made quick work of it.

Here's my best-guess translation of the text on the whiteboard that is briefly shown in the video.

*** WARNING: SPOILERS! ***

The text on the whiteboard does reveal clues about the game's story and content. Don't click below unless you wish to reveal potential story spoilers!

As usual Yu's handwriting is quite hard to make out. Additions/corrections are welcome (Kiyuu, David...?).

I'm fine with updates that just let us know everyone is doing well and they're working on the game. I don't want them to spoil everything and also let us in on too much information just in case we're let down when certain things don't materialize.

I think it would be cool if they did tech demos like the ones on Shenmue passport stuff to show off the facial animations and new character models.
