The first night you sleep in Xiuying's apartment, there is a scene when Ryo looks rather longingly towards Xiuying as she sleeps. It is a very well done scene that effectively yet subtly conveys the sexual tension imo.

Are you sure he was actually thinking about her? :D

Just kidding! :)

P.S.: I wonder if Shenhua will become more popular with SIII.

Shenhua and Ryo are probably brother and sister.

I'm sure it would have been mentioned at some point in either of the two games that Iwao had travelled to China again; not to mention Ryo would have been alive at the time, so it seems unlikely he would journey there again just to bang Shenhua's mother.

maybe they met through an international telephone club and Iwao was just super horny.

It's said Ryo's mother died when he was three years old. Shenhua is also 16, so she's two years younger than Ryo which allows this theory due to the time period of Ryo's mothers passing. Ryo's mother is also mysteriously rarely talked about, and yet Shenhua's birth parents are both said to be dead. There's far too many question marks there which hints at a fairly large reveal. You can't tell me that Shenhua's parentage won't be revealed in the series. And yet we get a blank as to who they are. They even trick the player into thinking the people in the flashback are her real parents, obscuring who her actual lineage is. This tells us that Shenhua's parents must be central characters to the story.

There is also nothing that indicates that Iwao went to Japan before Ryo was born or that Ryo was even born in Japan. For all we know, Ryo could have been born in China to a Chinese mother. Remember the comb. Doesn't Ryo remark it looks Chinese? It's also a woman's comb. Ryo was born in 1968. As Switch notes on Iwao's travels in China (found here) it is very likely that Ryo was born in China while Iwao was still training there.

In Kowloon, Ryo meets a "blind" street musician called Kai. When he meets him again later, Ryo discovers that not only is Kai not really blind, but that he was friends with his father.

Kai tells Ryo that he met Iwao around 20 years ago (from 1987, the year in which Ryo is in Kowloon), which helps to fix a time-frame for Iwao's training at Bailu village and his subsequent return to Japan with the mirrors.

Thus makes the idea that Shenhua and Ryo are brother and sister plausible. Add in the fact that the two have an inherent connection, and especially Ryo's connection with the Shenmue tree. He literally says he feels like he's seen it before while they talk about it, hinting that Ryo was born in Bailu. Even more evidence? The profile for Ine says she met Ryo when he was three. It's easy to think that she was hired right after Ryo's mother died (which is true), but it's also possible that she was hired when Iwao and Ryo got back from China.

Perhaps the biggest clue is how Ryo treats Shenhua. Pretty much every major young female character before Shenhua was treated as a potential love interest, from Nozomi to Joy to Fangmei. Xiuying acted as a mentor, but she's older than Ryo by many years. But Shenhua, who you would think would be treated as potential love interest never really is. Their relationship is treated as platonic from the very minute they meet despite the fact every girl (barring Xiuying) before her wanted to jump his bones. This is an important detail.

To review:

- Ryo's mother is unnamed so far (hinting at a major reveal
- Shenhua's true parentage is obscured (again, hinting at a major reveal)
- the timeline of Iwao being in China lines up with Ryo being born there
- the comb in the basement looks Chinese
- Ryo mentions having a connection with the Shenmue tree and notes perhaps seeing it before
- Ryo and Shenhua's relationship is platonic when about every female in the series is treated as a potential love interest
- There is nothing that indicates that Ryo was born in Japan or even when Iwao left China for Japan.

Conclusion: Ryo and Shenhua are brother and sister.

It has to be Nozomi really, doesn't it? She's his childhood sweetheart!

She did try to kiss him though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EDtACQRSw0&feature=youtu.be&t=69 (though so did Leia to Luke :D ).

I don't think she's trying to kiss him. She just steps forward and gets close to him and Ryo being stoic and enjoying his personal space is surprised by it.

Didn't Yu say that Shenhua and Ryo must never have sex?

Well Ryo himself is most attracted to Xiuying simply because she's better at martial arts than he is.

You can tell when Ryo is watching Xiuying sleep in her room.

It must have been awkward for Ryo to sleep in the same room as her though especially if he accidentally climbed in her bed in the middle of the night... I still can't get over that.
