Dev Room Progress Report Vol. 3
Posted by Ys Net (Creator)
Greetings Everyone,

In this month’s update we present to you our third development report!
Who’s this new face…? Please check it out!

Thank you for watching and we hope you enjoyed it!
We have also been receiving questions from our backers regarding our plans to participate in upcoming game shows. While our schedule has yet to be finalized, we will be devoting June to game development and as a result, will unfortunately not be participating in any game shows. On the other hand, we look forward to bringing you our monthly updates and hope you do too!
Thank you!
From the Shenmue III Team

Welp. No E3, unless they're fucking with us.

On the upswing, I really like that they're taking the character models closer to Kenji Miyawaki's art. I wasn't expecting it at all, so I'm actually quite pleased.

So, random NPC that you interact with or do we think this character is someone that has relevance to the plot? It's weird to see it rendered without in game lighting and textures, almost looks like a cartoon. That makes it hard for me to see him as something other than someone you move crates with or a street fight.

I'm glad they finally showed character model work, even if it wasn't one we wanted to see. :-)
It's something I was hoping they would have as a filler update for a long time now.

I don't think they are. If Sega chooses to announce ports of 1 & 2 at E3, they might announce that 3 is being delayed, but at least this pretty much confirms that we are not getting a trailer in June.

No E3... I fully expect a delay now. That isn't a good sign. Unless, like Spagett! said, they're playing the fuck on us.

Hmm, interesting. At least I can set my expectations accordingly.

Doesn't it look a bit cartoony ?? Even the shader looks similar to SFV...

WTF about no E3 again... I guess this means no december 2017.

It's not finished. No details and such have yet been added.

I wouldn't mind a more anime-like approach to the game specially because most games end up looking very similar, but since the first Shenmue games tried to be so realistic it's a very night/day aesthetic choice.

I had a problem with it looking cartoony as well, but then I realized that there's no lighting or detail at all on the model. Also, characters like the yakuza boss and Goro also looked somewhat cartoony despite the realistic aesthetic.

Maybe the next update we will get a Shenmue III trailer?

But there were always some pretty wild-looking characters, particularly some of the ones with smaller parts. There's always been a kind of spectrum ranging from more realistic to less realistic characters.

Well, it looks like Miyawaki's art. If I remember rightly, he's a manga artist, so...

I dunno about the rest of you, but I actually quite like that they've made the choice to go more stylised. Realism chasing was never going to happen on Shenmue III's budget, so I'm glad they're making use of their genuinely great character designer's artwork to shape the art style of the game.

That's my takeaway... that the model looks more like a fully realized version of the character design art than we've seen previously. There's something lively about the character design sketches that has not always translated well to the 3D characters. This looks like it has a lot of the personality of the drawings carried over really well to the character model.

I don't like it. I'm not saying to chase photorealistim but I don't want manga style characters either. There's a medium. Realism doesn't necessarily mean photo realistic. Would you say Life Is Strange is photorealistic? I'm sorry, but no. Stylized like the art just isn't Shenmue to me.
